PROJECT - Linear Models

This document outlines a project to develop and use linear models to make predictions about important issues. Students will select real-world data, develop a linear equation model by graphing the data and finding the line of best fit, and use the model to make predictions about the future values of the variables. The goal is for students to practice linear modeling skills and explore what their models might show about future trends for important environmental and social issues.

PROJECT Linear Modeling

Essential Question:

Can Linear Models help us to make valid predictions?

A mathematical model is a description of a relationship using

mathematical language. The process of developing a mathematical
model is termed mathematical modeling (also written modeling).
Mathematical models are used not only in the natural sciences (such as physics, biology, earth science,
meteorology) and engineering disciplines, but also in the social sciences (such as economics, psychology,
sociology and political science); physicists, engineers, statisticians, operations research analysts and economists
use mathematical models most extensively.

Mathematical models can take many forms. Today we will be using equations models to represent
relationships.

Task:

We have explored data with some of today’s most common environmental issues. We have looked at the
concept of Linear Regression and seen how to develop a suitable linear model in the form of an equation.

You will be exploring some of the world’s most important issues. You will be developing a linear equation
model from which you can use to make important predictions about the future.

1. Select you table of data from the excel document.

2. Define the variables that you are using in your scenario.

3. Use suitable software (Autograph or Excel) to graph the data as Scatter Graph. Make sure the graph is
communicated clearly.
4. Draw a trend line by hand on your graph.
5. Determine the equation of your linear model, using all the knowledge from our Linear Equations Unit. Show all
the steps you went through to find your equation.
6. Explain how you know your equation makes sense in context of your scenario.
7. Use technology (Autograph or Excel) to find the Linear Regression Function.
8. Compare your model to the regression function. Explain any changes you would make to your equation model
to make a more accurate trend line, and why you would make those equations.
9. Use your equation model to make these predictions.
a) What does your model say about your data in 100 years from now?
b) Rainforest: When will the Amazon rainforest be reduced to 50% of its original amount?
Carbon Emissions: When will the carbon emissions reach 1, 600, 000 metric tons?
HIV Population: When do you predict that the world will have 50, 000, 000 people HIV positive?
10. Write one more question exploring the future (or past) of your data. Use you equation model to answer your
question.
11. Do your predictions make sense in context of the scenario?
12. Write a few sentences about the significance of your findings. What do they show us about the future?
