Prospectus 2018
Prospectus 2018
Prospectus 2018
Ewing Christian college Allahabad (a Christian minority institution of the church of North India), as an Autonomous
Constituent Post Graduate College of the University of Allahabad, has always been taking the right initiative in the
direction of improvement in the quality and content of the educational programmes. The general education,
professional education and skill based vocational education, within the framework of the semester system are
fulfilling the requirements of the University Grants Commission.
We are once again geared up for the approaching Academic Session 2018-2019 with renewed vigour and
encouragement from a glance at the last academic session, when B.Voc. (IT & ITeS), B.Voc. (Food Processing), B. Com.
And B.C.A. courses were launched along with number of skill based programmes. The college Staff and the
Management, are working persistently towards improving both teaching and infrastructure.
The college cherishes its prestigious project, to convert itself into an e- learning hub, initiated in the year 2006 with
support from the UGC as the “College with Potential for Excellence” which has since long been completed. Facilities
are now available for collection and production of e – learning material at the Undergraduate level through a Content
Collection Centre and an Audio- Visual Studio, both well equipped with state – of – the – Art technology. A Central
Server Room is functional for the storage of e – learning material and for dissemination of the data. The entire campus
is Wi-Fi enabled.
The college regained Post Graduate status which it had lost in 1921 and was struggling ever since to regain that status.
In fact, the college went for autonomy in 1994 with an aim to regain Post Graduate status which was assured in the
UGC guidelines for autonomous colleges but was denied by the parent university on one pretext or the other. The
College fraternity is heartily indebted to our Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. R. L. Hangloo who granted permission to
the college to start Post Graduate programmes using the provision of UGC guidelines to autonomous colleges, which
was also approved by the Academic Council and the Executive Council of the University of Allahabad. As a result,
the college was able to launch Post Graduate programmes both in Science and Arts streams from the session 2016-17.
This year, the first batch of Post Graduates of autonomy era will pass out from the college and some of them may
remain with us as research scholars, as we look forward for the permission from the University for initiating research
in post graduate departments.
Come and experience the rich academic tradition of the college.

PRINCIPAL
COLLEGE PROFILE
Ewing Christian College was founded in the year 1902 by Dr. Arthur H. Ewing, a missionary who was its first
Principal. The College Campus is located on the Northern Bank of Jamuna River about 3 Km. away from the Sangam
and about 4 Km. from the Railway Station. The College is a Christian Minority Educational Institution and controlled
by the Ewing Christian College Society, consisting of the Bishop of Lucknow Diocese of the Church of North India
and other Indian Christian representatives.
Ewing Christian College as an Autonomous Associated College since 1994, is now an autonomous constituent college
of the University of Allahabad. The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the University of Allahabad, under the
UGC Scheme of Autonomous Colleges have allowed the College to formulate its own courses of studies and evaluate
its own students separately. The Degree is awarded by the University of Allahabad. The College faculty, therefore,
after great deliberations and careful planning has developed courses of studies most appropriate under the prevailing
circumstances.
Several self-financed vocational courses namely –Electronics, Computer Application, Biotechnology, Microbiology,
Biophysics, B. Com., BCA and degree programmes of B. Voc. have been introduced as degree subjects / courses.
Several Diploma programs (Computer Programming and Software Applications, Laboratory Technology, Business
Management and Administration, Leadership Development and Secretarial Practices) and some other compulsory
Certificate Programs have been started to impart technical skills to students to procure middle-level jobs or to start
their own business after first degree. The timings of these programs are such as to enable students of the College to
enroll themselves without missing their classes.
Regular attendance (75%) in the class room has been made compulsory and Semester System of teaching and
evaluation has been introduced in the College since the academic session 2014-15, based on Choice-Based Credit
System (CBCS). Entire College programs, thus, have been oriented towards maintaining high academic standards,
acquisition of knowledge, skills and scientific temper rather than merely passing the examinations for a degree. The
medium of instruction is mostly English in Science. Teaching in Arts Faculty is done both in English and Hindi.
The large eco-friendly campus, well-equipped laboratories, libraries, health centre, prolific gardens, daily Chapel
services, games and sports and a host of other extra-curricular activities encourage students to develop a spirit of
enquiry and enrich their lives meaningfully. A modern Gymnasium, Women Cell with counseling as one of its
1
activities, Minority Coaching Centre with its Career Information Services, Student Union and Cafeteria etc. provide
excellent Student Support Services.
It is expected that students, seeking admission in this College will take admission, if selected, fully aware of its
Minority and Autonomous Status, and will be more interested in acquiring knowledge and skills by regularly
attending classes rather than merely for the purpose of passing the examinations for a Bachelor’s Degree.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Why do we need Community College?
• India, at present, is recognized as one of the youngest nations in the world with over 50% of the population under
the age of 30 years. It is estimated that by about 2025, India will have 25% of the world’s total workforce. In order
to harness the full demographic dividend, India needs an educational system which is of high quality, affordable,
flexible and relevant to the individuals, economy and to the society as a whole. Presently, the country faces a
demand – supply mismatch, as the economy needs more ‘skilled’ workforce and also the managers and
entrepreneurs than created annually. In fact, majority of the contemporary institutions of higher learning remain
almost disconnected with the requirements of the workplace. The skill oriented courses available in the market
have low credibility and acceptability with the employers. The traditional higher education system in the country
is also rigid in terms of duration of courses, timings for teaching-learning, place of study and choice of subjects.
There is a worldwide shift from conventional educational system to competence based qualification system. With
a view to make the skills acquired by the learners acceptable nationally, the curricula and system of certification
should align with the National Occupational Standards. In order to facilitate offering of nationally standardized
skill related programmes, the Government of India along with MHRD and UGC , have given shape to the concept
of “Community College” in India.
• India is a vast country with a population of more than 1.2 billion. 75% of India’s population lives in about six lac
villages. There is a visible difference in rural and urban, rich and poor, highly educated and lesser educated,
forward and backward areas. While resourceful people, particularly those living in urban areas, have had access
to better education and professional training, but vast majority of those who live in rural areas and slums are
lesser educated and hardly undergo any technical, professional and vocational training. In fact, for most of such
people, quality education and higher technical and professional education is unaffordable. In terms of career
options, such lesser educated and not so fortunate people tend to work in low paid unorganized sector. Per
person productivity of such persons works out to be a small fraction of productivity of those who work in
organized sector of Indian economy. In an increasingly competitive economic environment of our country, the
unorganized sector, which is so important for the country, needs to increase the productivity of its manpower for
its survival and growth. Yet another paradox before the Indian informal sector is that it can- not afford employing
highly educated and professionally trained manpower which usually aspires for highly challenging, rewarding
and satisfying career. The only option available before the Indian informal sector is to depend upon relatively low
paid manpower trained through non-formal system of skill development. There is, therefore, an urgent need to
train millions of persons every year through a countrywide network of non-formal skill development. Such non-
formal skill training should attract beneficiaries from all cross-sections of Indian society.
Benefits of taking Admission in Community College:
Community College offersopportunity to the students

general education to Senior Secondary School pass-outs, with general education and /or vocational education
background.

age
