Begin Shoebox Circuits

This lesson plan outlines a science lesson for 5th grade students on circuits and wiring. The lesson will have students continue building circuits using materials like batteries, lightbulbs, foil, and fasteners inside a shoebox over two 45 minute periods. To start, the teacher will review circuits and materials from the previous lesson. Students will then work to design and build their own working circuit inside their shoebox following a presentation and instructions from the teacher. At the end, students will draw a diagram of the circuit they created. The teacher will assess students' understanding by evaluating their circuit designs and completed shoebox houses.

LESSON PLAN

Subject: Science Grade: 5 Date: April 10, 2018

Essential Question: How can we apply our knowledge of circuits to wire a house?

Lesson: designing a shoebox circuit Time: 2:25- 3:10

SLOs:
4. Demonstrate that a continuous loop of conducting material is needed for an
uninterrupted flow of current in a circuit.
5. Distinguish electrical conductors - materials that allow electricity to flow through them
- from insulators - materials that do not allow electricity to flow through them.

Instructional Objectives:
Knowledge:
Students will understand how to make a circuit that is controlled by a switch.
Students will know which materials can be used to conduct electricity other than wire

Key Questions:
How do you make a switch?
How can you make a series circuit?
What materials could you use to wire the house?

Materials:
Lightbulbs
Cardboard
Aluminum foil
Battery
Hot glue gun
Tape
Brass fasteners
Paperclips

Preparation:
Cuts lightbulbs and strip plastic insulator off
Prepare power point explaining how to build the shoebox circuit house
Print off instruction sheet enough for each student
Have enough blank papers for students to draw their circuit design

Adaptations:
Instructions will be put in a visual format on the smartboard for visual learners.
Instructions will be written on the smartboard for student to reference
Lesson Procedure:
Intro (5 minutes)
1.Inform students that they will be continuing with the shoebox circuit they started
yesterday.
2. Show students the slides that were not shown in the presentation.
3. Show students materials.
4. inform students that their design might change. What they create might not work the
way they expected it to work so at the end of the project they will draw the design that
they made whether it has changed or not.
5. explain how I changed some things while I was building my project
Body (45 minutes)
6. show students the power point presentation of what they will be making.
8. reintroduce the example shoebox house that I made.
9. Give students instructions about how to use the hot glue guns.
10. student work period
Conclusion (5 minutes)
11. students will clean up materials
12. students will put their design away in their science duo-tangs.

Assessment:

Summitively assess shoebox circuit design
