Mechanical Vibrations Tutorial 5 PDF

This document provides instructions for solving vibration problems for multi-degree of freedom systems. It asks the reader to: 1) Derive the mass and stiffness matrices and natural frequencies for a basic 3 degree of freedom system. 2) Calculate the natural frequencies and mode shapes for a more complex vehicle suspension system. 3) Normalize mode shape vectors based on different criteria.

Tutorial 5 Vibration

1 (a) Consider the system of Figure 1. For c1 = c2 = c3 = 0, derive the equation of

motion and calculate the mass and stiffness matrices. Note that setting k3 = 0 in
your solution should result in the stiffness matrix given by Eq. (4.9).

1 (b) Calculate the characteristic equation from problem 1 (a) for the case
m1 = 9 kg, m2 = 1 kg, k1 = 24 N/m, k2 = 3 N/m, k3 = 3 N/m
and solve for the system's natural frequencies.

1 (c) Calculate the vectors u1 and u2 for problem 1 (b).

1 (d) For initial conditions

calculate the free response of the system of Problem 1 (b). Plot the response x1
and x2.

Figure 3. Write the equations of motion in matrix form. Calculate the natural
frequencies for k1 =103 N/m, k2 = 104 N/m, m2 = 50 kg, and m1 = 2000 kg.
