Escape Routes
1. All fire exits can be opened immediately and easily.
2. Fire doors are clear of obstructions.
3. All escape routes are clear.
4. All emergency fastening devices to fire exits (push bars and pads, etc.) work
correctly.
5. External routes are clear and safe.
6. Do all electronic release mechanisms on escape doors work correctly? Do they
‘fail safe’ in the open position?
7. Fire door seals and self-closing devices are in good condition.
8. All roller shutters provided for fire compartmentation do work correctly.
9. External escape stairs are safe.
10. Escape route compartmentation is in good repair.
11. Every room in the school have a map posted identifying two ways out.
Escape Lighting
1. Luminaires and exit signs are in good condition and undamaged.
2. Emergency lighting and sign lighting are working correctly.
3. Charging indicators (if fitted) are visible.
4. All emergency generators have been tested.
Firefighting Equipment
1. All fire extinguishers are in place.
2. Fire extinguishers are clearly visible.
3. All firefighting equipment is in good condition.
4. The pressure in ‘stored pressure’ fire extinguishers is correct.
Fire Warning Systems
1. The alarm system work correctly.
2. Any linked fire protection systems operate correctly. (e.g. magnetic door
holder released, smoke curtains drop)
3. Voice alarm systems do work correctly.
General
1. Any emergency water tanks/ponds are at their normal capacity.
2. Sprinkler system is in good condition.
Miscellaneous
1. Any necessary fire engine direction signs are in place.
2. The smoke and heat ventilation system is in good condition
