Example 4)

A circular bar of diameter 2.50 cm is subjected to an axial tension of 200

N. If the material is elastic with E=200 000 N / mm2 , estimate the
percentage elongation.

The cross- sectional area of the bar is;

A  (25mm) 2  490,625mm 2
4

The average tensile stress is then;

P 200 N
   0,408Mpa
A 490,625mm 2

The longitudinal tensile strain will threfore be;

 0,408Mpa
   0,00000204
E 200000Mpa

The percentage elongation will therefore be;

(0,00000204)  100  %0,000204

Example 5)

A tensile test is carried out on a bar of mild steel of diameter 2 cm. The
bar yields under a load of 800 N. It reaches a maximum load of 1500 N,
and breaks finally at a load of 700 N

Estimate,
a) The tensile stress at the yield point,
b) The ultimate tensile test stress,
c) The average stress at the breaking point, if the diameter of the
fractured neck is 1 cm.

The original cross-section of the bar is;

A0   (20mm) 2  314mm 2
4

a) The average tensile stress at yielding is then;

Py 800 N
y    2,55Mpa
A0 314mm 2

b) The ultimate stress is the nominal stress at the maximum load;

Pmax 1500 N
 ult    4,78Mpa
A0 314mm 2

c) The cross-sectional area in the fractured neck is;

Af   (10mm) 2  78,5mm 2
4

Pf 700 N
f    8,92Mpa
Af 78,5mm 2
