Preparations
Read this entire document before you begin!
Use curriculum page 5.3.4 for reference - review this page before you begin.
Students will work in teams of two, and each student must take an active role.
Handle the Fluke 620 LAN CableMeter with care; it is an expensive instrument!
Answer all questions shown in italic!
Background
The Fluke 620 LAN CableMeter includes the following test functions that will be used in this lab:
Cable Test – Pass / Fail
Cable length
Wire Map
Instructions:
The instructor will provide the following items to each table row:
Fluke 620 LAN CableMeter
Straight-through coupler
Cable identifier #1
Test Cables A, B, C, D
Working in teams of two students, perform the following tests on each of the test cables:
Cable Test – Pass / Fail
Cable length
Wire Map
Wire Map test results for a straight-through cable look like this:
Near end of cable ->>> 12 36 45 78 ID (Both near and far ends of the
straight-through cable are properly
Far end of cable ->>> 12 36 45 78 #1 connected.)
Near end of cable ->>> 12 36 45 78 ID (Both near and far ends of crossover
cable are properly connected, but the
Far end of cable ->>> 36 12 45 78 #1 tester will report "MISWIRE"
because it is testing straight-through.)

To test a cable, place the near end of the cable into the RJ-45 jack labeled UTP/FTP on the tester. Place the
RJ-45-RJ-45 female coupler on the far end of the cable and then insert the Cable Identifier into the other
side of the coupler.
Move the CableMeter's rotary switch to each test position and note the displayed result. Switch the meter
off when finished.
Our lab uses the T568-B standard for all UTP cable terminations.
Use the table and diagram below for reference when studying wire map test results:

The instructor has established special connections in the lab's wiring for you to test.
You may use the special test connections found on either of these racks:
Pod C Rack
Patch panel port 10 to West wall, network outlet "C-10"
Patch panel port 11 to West wall, network outlet "C-11"
Patch panel port 12 to West wall, network outlet "C-12"
Pod D Rack
Patch panel port 10 to West wall, network outlet "D-10"
Patch panel port 11 to West wall, network outlet "D-11"
Patch panel port 12 to West wall, network outlet "D-12"
The instructor has placed the following instrument set at each of the above racks:
Fluke 620 LAN CableMeter
Known-good straight-through UTP cable
Straight-through coupler
Cable identifier #1
Leave the meter at the rack throughout your testing, and leave all materials at the rack after you finish.
Working in teams of two students, perform the following tests on the three test cables on your rack:
Cable Test – Pass / Fail
Cable length
Wire Map
Turn off the meter and return all materials to the rack.
3. Suppose you have no cable tester, but you have a multimeter and a two short pieces of scrap UTP
patch cord, each of which has an RJ45 plug on one end and stripped, bare wire on the other end. How
could you use the multimeter's continuity testing mode to identify an open wire in a UTP cable run
from a patch panel through the wall to a jack that is 200 feet away?
Explain, and draw a diagram to help support your answer:
