Function 2 Edited

This document provides examples and exercises on composite functions. Composite functions involve applying two or more functions sequentially. For example, if f(x) = x + 2 and g(x) = 3x - 1, then the composite function gf(x) means first applying f(x) and then applying g(x) to the result. The document gives 16 examples of calculating composite functions given the definitions of the original functions f and g. It also involves finding the definitions of functions g given the composite functions fg or gf.

Chapter 1: Functions
1.3: Composite Functions

In the diagram, the function f maps set X onto set Y and the function g maps set Y onto Z.
If set X is mapped directly onto set Z, the mapping is the composition of functions f and g.
The composite function is written as gf
This means that the mapping under f is carried out first, followed by the mapping under the
function g.
