ME 301 HW#6 Due: Monday 3/19/2018: C C H H

This document outlines 4 homework problems for a thermodynamics class. Problem 1 involves determining the reversibility of refrigeration cycles operating between reservoirs at different temperatures. Problem 2 involves calculating work and heat transfer during an isothermal compression of water. Problem 3 requires determining the entropy change when steam is generated from a saturated liquid-vapor mixture. Problem 4 involves calculating the entropy change of air as it cools in a constant-volume tank.

ME 301 HW#6 Due: Monday 3/19/2018

1. A refrigeration cycle operating between two reservoirs receives energy QC from a cold
reservoir at TC = 280 K and rejects energy QH to a hot reservoir TH = 330 K. For each of the
following cases determine whether the cycle operates reversibly, irreversibly, or is impossible: (20
points)
(a) QC = 1500 kJ, QH = 2200 kJ,
(b) QC = 1500 kJ, Wcycle = 120 kJ,
(c) QH = 1600 kJ, Wcycle = 500 kJ,
(d) Coefficient of Performance (COP) = 6.

2. Four kilograms of water initially at 200 degree Celsius and 0.5 MPa undergo an isothermal,
internally reversible compression process to the saturated liquid state. Determine the work and
heat transfer involved in the process (in kJ). Sketch the process on P-v and T-s coordinates.
Associate the work and heat transfer with the areas on these diagrams. (30 points)

3. A well-insulated rigid tank contains 3 kg of a saturated liquid-vapor mixture of water at 200

kPa. Initially, three quarters of the mass is in the liquid phase. An electric resistance heater placed

in the tank is now turned on and kept on until all the liquid in the tank is vaporized. Determine the

entropy change of the steam during this process(20 points)

4. Seven kilograms of air is contained in a constant-volume tank with 327 degree in Celsius and

120 kPa. Then it is cooled to ambient temperature (27 Celsius). Determine the entropy change of

the air and universe due to the process and sketch the process on the T-s diagram. (30 points)
