WINS AND LOSSES: The Rangers went 67-95 this season to finish in 5th place in the A.L. West, 36.0 games behind Houston.
It marked the team’s 2nd straight season with a losing record, the 1st time with back-to-back sub-.500 marks since 2005-08 (4 in a
row), this after one losing campaign in 8 years from 2009-16. The team’s .414 winning percentage matched 2014 (also .414, 67-95)
for the 5th-lowest in Rangers history, better than only 1972 (.351, 54-100), 1973 (.352, 57-105), 1985 (.385, 62-99) and 1982 (.395,
64-98). The 95 losses are also T5th-most in Texas history. Club had 11 fewer wins than 2017 (78-84) and won 28 fewer games than
in 2016 (95-67).
Texas dropped 3 of its 1st 5 games, but had a 4-6 mark after 10 contests before going 14-25 from April 8-May 21, taking season
record to 18-31. From May 22-June 30, the Rangers were 20-15, the most wins in any 35-game span for the club all year. The span
included the team’s longest losing streak (7 G, 6/7-15) and longest win streak (7 G, 6/16-23) of the season, the two falling back-to-
back. It made the 2018 Rangers just the 5th team since 2000 to win 7+ in a row immediately following a losing streak of 7-or-more,
first since the 2014 Red Sox (credit Elias Sports Bureau). With the season record sitting at 38-46 through the end of June, Texas lost
16 of 20 to open the month of July, dropping team’s mark to 42-62. It was the 6th-earliest date (July 26) for the Rangers to reach 20
games under .500 in a season in club history. The Rangers had a 16-10 record from July 27-August 24, most wins in any 26-game
stretch for the team in 2018, to take season mark to 58-72. Texas lost 5 straight to end August and went 9-23 in the final 32 contests
beginning August 25 to finish at 67-95. Team’s .281 win pct. in that season-ending span was the lowest in MLB.
Rangers were never above .500 in the entire 2018 campaign, as the even 1-1 record through 2 games on March 30 was the
year’s high point. It marked the first season in which Texas was not above .500 at any point since 2007, and it was just the 8th such
campaign in Rangers history (1973, 1984, 1985, 1987, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2018). Team was below .500 following 161 of team’s 162
contests in 2018. After reaching 20 games under .500 for the first time on July 26 (42-62), the team did not hit that mark again until
September 8 (61-81), and club’s low point was season-ending 28-under. It marked just the 2nd time in a span of 33 seasons (1986-
2018) for Rangers to reach 28-under at some point in a campaign (also 2014).
Texas was 41-56 (.423) in the first ‘half’, 11th in A.L. Rangers went 26-39 (.400) after the break, 3rd-lowest in A.L. and 6th-low-
est in MLB, and the team’s worst performance in the 2nd ‘half’ since 2000 (.377, 29-48).
The club was 17-28-7 in 52 series this season, 11-13-2 at home and 6-15-5 on the road. Texas went 3-9 in its last 12 series to
finish the year.
Rangers had a 28-48 (.368) record against A.L. West opponents, the team’s 5th-lowest winning pct. ever against the division
and lowest since 2002 (.345, 20-38). Texas went 18-15 (.545) vs. A.L. Central teams, 4th straight year with a winning record, going
14-8 in final 22 games against the division. Team’s 12-21 (.364) record vs. A.L. East marked 6th-lowest winning pct. ever against that
division, 2nd-lowest beginning 1986 (10-23, .303 in 2014).
WAKAMATSU FINISHES SEASON AS INTERIM MANAGER: Jeff Banister was dismissed as Rangers manager prior to the club’s
game on September 21. He finished with a 325-313 (.509) record in his first managerial post, the 4th-most wins and 5th-most
games (638) of any manager in team history, and he is one of only 3 managers to ever guide Texas to the postseason. The team
had a 64-88 record at the time of Banister’s dismissal.
Bench coach Don Wakamatsu took over as interim manager for the duration of the year, with the team going 3-7 in his 10 games
at the helm. Wakamatsu became just the 5th interim manager in Rangers history.
ATTENDANCE: The Rangers finished with a home attendance of 2,107,107 for 81 dates, an average of 26,014. It was a
drop of 400,653 from the 2017 figure of 2,507,760, the 7th-largest decline in MLB. It was the 5th-largest year-to-year drop ever for
the Rangers in home attendance, biggest since 2014 (-459,540), as Texas has seen declines in 5 of the past 6 seasons since a fran-
chise-record turnout of 3,460,280 in 2012. It was the team’s smallest overall and average attendance since 2008 (1,945,857 / 24,323)
and the 3rd-smallest figures for the club in a full season at Globe Life Park in Arlington (2,095,132 / 25,866 in 2003). Club ranked 7th
in the A.L. in attendance this season, 19th in MLB. Rangers hosted one sellout (Opening Day, March 29 vs. Houston), fewest since
2008 (1).
Club had 3 crowds of 40,000-or-more, including a season-best 47,253 for Opening Day on March 29 vs. Houston. The Astros
accounted for each of the club’s 3 highest, as well as 5 of the 6 highest, single-game attendance figures in 2018. Texas lost in each of
the team’s 7 top-attended games at home this year. Team drew 18 crowds of less than 20,000, including season-low 16,718 on April
9 vs. Los Angeles-AL, smallest since July 8, 2010 vs. Baltimore (16,240).
The Rangers have now topped the 2 million mark in home attendance in 22 of the last 23 and 28 of the last 30 years beginning 1989.
BASERUNNING: Texas baserunners recorded 74 stolen bases, 9th-most in the A.L. and the team’s lowest total since 2006
(53). The 9th-place finish was 2nd-lowest league ranking for the Rangers since 2007 (ranked 12th in 2012). The club was successful
in 74 of 109 (67.9%) attempts, ranking 12th in steal pct. in the A.L., lowest pct. since 2014 (64.0%). It was the Rangers’ 5th straight
year with a sub-74% SB rate, and team’s 109 steal attempts were fewest since 2008 (106).
Rangers had season-high 4 steals on July 22 vs. CLE, but the club’s 4 games with 3+ steals matched lowest total in last 11
seasons (also 4 G in 2016). Club’s 35 caught stealing ranked as 6th-most in A.L., fewest since 2008 (25). Rougned Odor’s 12 caught
stealing tied for the A.L. lead and accounted for over one-third of the Rangers’ total in 2018. Odor became the 1st MLB player with
as many as 12 CS in as little as 24 SBA since Pirates’ Jose Tabata in 2012 (12 CS/20 SBA). Only other Ranger to do it was Juan
Beniquez (12 CS/22 SBA) in 1978. Delino DeShields’ team-high 20 SB ranked T14th in A.L., fewest for a Texas leader since 2006
(Ian Kinsler-11). Odor also accounted for 3 of the Rangers’ 7 times picked off on the year, as he tied for most in the A.L.
BATTING: Texas finished with a .240 (1308-5453) batting average in 2018, 2nd-lowest in the A.L. (BAL-.239) and 8th-lowest
in MLB. It marked the 2nd-lowest average in team history (.217 in 1972) for a 2nd straight year (.244 in 2017) and Rangers’ lowest in
the DH era (since 1973). Team has finished in A.L.’s bottom 3 in batting average in back-to-back years after 7 straight seasons in the
league’s top 5. Team’s major league-low .224037 road average was slightly below the 2017 away figure (.224043), lowest by any A.L.
team in the DH era (since 1973, full seasons only).
Team batted .238 (267-1121) over the first 33 games through May 3, 3rd-lowest in the A.L. at that point. From May 4-June 9,
club batted .215 (237-1102) spanning 34 contests to drop season mark to .227, 2nd-lowest in MLB on that date (ARI-.222). Beginning
with 16-hit game on June 10 vs. Houston, Rangers posted a .268 (551-2056) average over 59 games through August 19 to rise from
.227 to season-high .247, 9th in the A.L. The .268 BA in that span ranked as 2nd-highest in MLB (BOS-.271). Over final 36 games
beginning Aug. 20, Texas hit just .216 (253-1174) to finish with a .240 figure.
On Sept. 2 vs. Minnesota, the Rangers set a club record with 13 extra base hits, T2nd-highest extra-base hit total in MLB this
season (14 by BOS on 9/26 vs. BAL-G1). The team’s 45 total bases in the game marked 2nd-highest total in club history to only 50
TB in the record-setting 30-run game on Aug. 22, 2007 at Baltimore (Game 1). The Sept. 2 contest was one of Rangers’ 2 games with
season-high 19 hits (also Aug. 8 vs. Seattle), and the Rangers’ 18 runs against the Twins marked team’s most in a single game since
April 17, 2012 at Boston (18 R). It was the most runs in a home game since July 25, 2011 vs. Minnesota (20 R).
Led MLB with 239 runs in 40 games from the All-Star break through Sept. 2 (5.98 R/G), then scored just 74 R in the final 25 G
beginning Sept. 3 (2.96 R/G). Placed 4th in the A.L. with 555 walks, 2nd-highest total for Texas since 2001 (595 in 2008). Rangers
ranked 7th in the league with 24 triples, most since 2015 (32). Batters’ 266 doubles were also most since 2015 (279), but ranked 11th
in the A.L. The season-high 8 doubles on Aug. 8 vs. SEA were team’s most in a game since 7/25/11 vs. MIN. Rangers’ A.L.-best 33
sac hits were most by the club since 2015 (43), leading the circuit for first time since 2010.
The Rangers ranked 2nd in MLB with a club-record 88 hit by pitch (previous 81 in 2017), trailing only Tampa Bay (101). Club
had 2 of the A.L.’s top 10 in hit by pitch (19-Chirinos, 12-Profar), as Robinson Chirinos matched a single-season club record (also 19
by Carlos Gomez in 2017). Ranked 3rd in MLB with A.L.-best 26 bunt hits (31-WAS, 28-CIN), and 141 infield hits were 2nd-most in
A.L. (148-TB) and ranked 5th in MLB. Texas batters finished with 1484 strikeouts, the 4th-highest total in MLB to CWS (1594), SD
(1523), and PHI (1520). It was the 2nd-highest total in club history (1493 in 2017).
Team was shut out 12 times, T3rd-most in the A.L., 7th-most in club history and most since 2009 (13). Batters were blanked 4
times in September, most in one month since Aug. 2016 (4).
Clutch Hitting: Texas batted .243 (318-1306) with runners in scoring position, 12th in the A.L. and 3rd-lowest in club history to
1992 (.227) and 1983 (lower .243). From July 20-Sept. 2, Texas batters hit .296 (107-362) with RISP, 3rd-best in MLB in that stretch.
Club hit .237 (28-118) with the bases loaded, 5th-lowest in A.L. and lowest figure for Texas since 1992 (.211). Hit .236 (182-771) in
close and late situations along with a .245 (443-1805) mark in 7th inning and later in 2018, both 8th in A.L.
CHALLENGES: The Rangers were successful on 19 of 44 (43.2%) managers challenges in 2018, MLB’s fifth year using
comprehensive instant replay. Jeff Banister went 18-for-42 on challenges while Don Wakamatsu was 1-for-2. The team had 25 fewer
challenges this season versus 2017 (69). Of the 25 calls challenged by Texas that were not overturned, 14 were ‘stands’ and 11 were
‘confirmed’. The 11 ‘confirmed’ calls were T2nd-most in MLB (14-MIN, 11-TEX/BOS/SEA), although 8 of those 11 challenges came in
the 6th-inning-or-later. In the team’s final 14 challenges beginning Aug. 8, club went 8-for-14 (57.1%) with 3 ‘confirmed’ and 3 ‘stands’.
COME-FROM-BEHIND WINS/CLOSE GAMES: The Rangers’ 30 come-from-behind wins were T4th-fewest in the A.L. and
lowest total for Texas since 2014 (25). Club overcame a season-high 6-run deficit in win on Aug. 24 at San Francisco, the team’s
largest deficit in any victory since 8/1/12 vs. LAA, and biggest comeback in a road game since 8/20/06 at DET. Texas won 4 games
when trailing by 5-or-more runs in 2018, tied for most in MLB with Boston, Oakland and Toronto (credit Elias Sports Bureau).
The Rangers won at home in the bottom of the 9th or later 3 times: May 9 vs. DET, May 26 vs. KC, and June 17 vs. COL.
It matched the 4th-lowest total of walk-off wins in club history, just the 6th season with 3-or-fewer. The list: 1-1996, 2-1974/1994,
3-1972/2003/2018. Only Baltimore (2) had fewer such wins among MLB clubs in 2018. It marked the 2nd straight year for Texas to
have zero walk-off wins after the All-Star break, this after it had not happened since 2006.
Texas lost 32 times after having a lead at some point, T7th-fewest in the A.L. and 7 less than in 2017 (39 in 2017, 28 in 2016,
31 in 2015). Rangers lost just 3 times when leading after 8 innings, fewest such defeats since 2014 (2). Club’s largest lead in a loss
this season was an 8-run edge on July 24 vs. Oakland (led 10-2 after 6 innings). It was the team’s largest blown lead in a game since
May 6, 2010 vs. Kansas City (led 8-0, went on to win 13-12), and 2nd-biggest lead in any loss in Texas history. The only other time to
lose when leading by 8+ runs was on May 16, 2006 at New York-AL (club led 9-0 and 10-1).
The team suffered just 4 walk-off losses, fewest since 2010 (4). Those 4 losses: May 15 at SEA, June 13 at LAD, Sept. 16 at
SD, Sept. 24 at LAA.
DAYS IN EACH POSITION: First (0); Second (1); Third (0); Fourth (8); Fifth (177). Texas finished 5th in the A.L. West for the
second time since the division added a fifth team in 2013 (also 5th place in 2014). It marked just the 3rd time in the last 11 seasons
to end the year anywhere other than 1st or 2nd place (T3rd in 2017). Club occupied one of the division’s top 3 spots for a single day
(T2nd with 3 other teams after win on March 30). Team was in last place, or tied for last place, for all 186 days in the campaign, as
each day in any position other than 5th place was in a tie with at least one other club. Texas was last tied for 4th place on April 8, and
spent the final 175 days of the season in 5th place beginning April 9. Rangers did not spend a single day in first place in either 2017
or 2018 after winning the division in back-to-back years in 2015 and 2016.
Texas was a season-high 36.0 games behind division-winning Houston for each of the final 2 days on Sept. 29-30, the 4th-larg-
est deficit to end a campaign in club history (43.0 GB in 2001, 38.5 GB in 1972, 37.0 GB in 1973). It was the 2nd-largest division
margin for any MLB club, better than only Baltimore (-61.0 GB in A.L. East). Beginning with a loss on Aug. 25, Rangers saw 15.0
games added to its division deficit over the season’s final 37 days (from -21.0 GB to -36.0 GB). Team was eliminated from division
contention with loss on Sept. 4 in game no. 138, earliest point to be out of the division race since 2014 (game no. 135).
DAYS OF WEEK: Sunday: 9-18; Monday: 6-14; Tuesday: 9-16; Wednesday: 10-13; Thursday: 6-7; Friday: 15-12; Saturday:
12-15. Club’s only winning record came on Friday, as club has had a losing record in Friday games just once in the past 15 seasons
(2014). Won 5 straight Friday games from July 27-Aug. 24. The 14 Monday losses were 2nd-most in club history (12-15 in 1988).
Team was 3-11 in Sunday road contests. Dropped 6 of last 7 Tuesday contests after opening year with 8-10 record.
DAY/NIGHT: Texas was 18-28 in day games and 49-67 at night. The .391 day win pct. was 7th-lowest in club history and lowest
since 1994 (.357, 10-18), lowest in a full season since 1987 (.364, 12-21). Team’s .422 night win pct. is 6th-lowest in Rangers history,
2nd-lowest since 1986 (.356, 42-76 in 2014). The club played 46 day games, T3rd-fewest in MLB (44-LAA, 45-LAD, 46-TEX/BOS).
Texas opened the year at 14-19 in day games before losing 9 of last 13.
DELAYS: The Rangers endured 11 delays across nine different games totaling 9 hours, 4 minutes in 2018. There were seven
delays (six games) in Arlington totaling 7 hours, 30 minutes, and four delays (three games) on the road to the tune of one hour, 34
minutes. On top of 10 rain/weather delays, a light failure on July 30 at Arizona caused a 22-minute delay in the action. The longest
delay of the season came on August 18 vs. Los Angeles-AL, lasting 2:26 prior to first pitch for a game which would end at 12:59 a.m.
the next morning. Five of the 11 delays took place before a game’s first pitch.
BLAME IT ON THE RAIN: The Rangers’ win on Sept. 21 vs. Seattle was abbreviated to less than 9 innings after the game was
called following a rain delay in the top of the 7th inning due to the weather, poor field conditions, and flash flood warnings in the
area. It was the 1st weather-shortened game in the history of Globe Life Park in Arlington (opened 1994), 1st overall for the
Rangers since 8/4/14 at CWS (5-3 loss in 7 innings). It was the 1st Texas win of less than 9 full innings since 5/12/06 at BOS
(6-0 win in 5 innings).
DESIGNATED HITTERS: Rangers DH’s combined to bat .248 (144-581) with 25 home runs and 80 RBI in 2018, the 8th-high-
est average in the A.L. It was the highest batting average and OPS (.766) for Texas DH’s since 2015 (.298/.824). The 25 HR were
most since 2011 (26), but ranked as 3rd-lowest figure in the A.L. Team’s .348 OBP from DH spot ranked 4th in the league, and was the
Rangers’ best since 2008 (club-record .421). Texas started 8 different players at DH, 3 less than in 2017. The list: Choo-85, Beltre-44,
Mazara-12, Gallo-4, Chirinos-3, Odor-2, Profar-1, Calhoun-1. Shin-Soo Choo hit 15 HR as DH, 10th-most in the A.L. despite just 85
starts there, and most by a Ranger in DH role since 2015 (Prince Fielder-19). Choo’s .831 OPS as DH was highest by any Ranger
with 80+ games in that spot in a season since Vladimir Guerrero in 2010 (.850).
4 // 2018 TEXAS RANGERS
DISABLED LIST: The Rangers had 34 disabled list stints in 2018, most in at least the past 11 seasons to go along with the 2nd
season of the 10-day DL. Club had 1322 games missed across those DL stints, including multiple stints for 6 different players: Tony
Barnette (3), Delino DeShields (3), Chris Martin (3), Adrián Beltré (2), Doug Fister (2), Martin Pérez (2). Six Rangers finished the year
on the 60-day disabled list, including pitchers Clayton Blackburn and Ronald Herrera, both of whom missed the entire campaign on
the 60-day DL.
DOUBLEHEADERS/POSTPONEMENTS: Texas did not have a postponement all season, one of just 3 MLB teams to avoid
that circumstance, joining Arizona and Colorado in that category for a year in which weather led to many postponements throughout
MLB. The team’s last rainout was on Sept. 5, 2017 at Atlanta, and the Rangers have not been postponed at home since April 17, 2016
vs. Baltimore.
The last doubleheader for Texas took place on Sept. 6, 2017 at Atlanta, a split twinbill, with Rangers winning the opener and
losing the nightcap. That marks the Rangers’ only doubleheader in the last 5 seasons (2014-18), as the team had not played a twinbill
at home (straight or split) since Sept. 30, 2012 vs. Los Angeles-AL (split DH). Rangers are 6-1-8 in 15 twinbills (day/night or split) since
dropping both games to Yankees on May 3, 2007 in Arlington. Over the last 22 seasons beginning 1994, Rangers have gone 13-5-12
overall in DH (day/night and split).
EXTRA INNINGS: Texas played 14 extra-inning games in 2018, going 7-7 (2-4 at home, 5-3 on road). Posted .500 record for
a 3rd straight year (6-6 in 2016; 5-5 in 2017) and have been .500-or-better in 4 straight seasons (5-4 in 2015). Team opened 6-1 in
extras after a win on June 2 at Los Angeles-AL, but lost 6 of last 7 (0-5 from June 13-Aug. 6), lone win in that season-ending span on
Aug. 24 at San Francisco. Rangers’ 8 road extra-inning games were most since 2016 (8) and matched most since club had 10 in 2005.
The team played a season-long 12 innings on both 5/1 at CLE (8-6 win) and 8/6 vs. SEA (4-3 loss). Three of the Rangers’ 4
walk-off losses in 2018 came in games which lasted exactly 11 frames.
FIELDING: Texas had a .980 (120 E/5971 TC) fielding percentage, lowest in the A.L. and 3rd-lowest in MLB, ahead of only St.
Louis (.978) and Philadelphia (.979). Since the start of 2001, the only years with a lower mark for Texas came in 2007 (lower .980)
and 2008 (.978). Club had 120 errors, also most in the A.L. and 3rd-most in MLB to STL (133) and PHI (123), the highest team total
since 2008 (132). Rangers ranked among A.L. leaders in double plays (2nd, 168) and assists (2nd, 1558). Team’s 5971 total chances
were fewest for the club since 2014 (5798), but ranked as 2nd-most in the A.L. (OAK-6080).
Rangers had a season-best 10-game errorless streak from Aug. 10-20, longest for the club since a 12-game run from April 23-
May 5, 2016 that was 2nd-longest span in club history. Season-high 3 errors on 4 different occasions: 6/13 at LAD, 7/5 at DET, 7/14 at
BAL, 8/28 vs. LAD. Had 3 different streaks of committing errors in at least 7 straight games: April 11-20 (8 G), May 7-15 (7 G), Sept.
24-30 (all 7 G on season-ending road trip). Jurickson Profar’s MLB-high 25 errors were the most by a Ranger since 2009 (25-Elvis
Andrus) and were more than double the next-closest Ranger in 2018 (Andrus-11).
On Aug. 16 vs. Los Angeles-AL, Jurickson Profar and Rougned Odor combined to turn a 5-4 triple play, the 6th triple play in
Rangers history. It was the 1st triple play for the Rangers since May 20, 2009 at Detroit, and one of 2 in MLB in 2018 (also Seattle
on April 19 vs. Houston). According to STATS LLC, it was the 1st MLB triple play without the batter being retired since the Brooklyn
Dodgers pulled the trick on June 3, 1912 vs. Cincinnati, a game played in the Dodgers’ final season at Washington Park before moving
into Ebbets Field in 1913.
HIT BY PITCHES: Texas batters had a club-record 88 hit by pitches, 2nd-most in MLB (TB-101). It marked the 3rd time in 4
seasons to set a club record in this category (76 in 2015, 81 in 2017), and the Rangers have posted 4 of the top 6 marks in club history
over the past 4 seasons (70 HBP in 2016). Team’s 22 HBP in June matched the club’s monthly record (also 22 HBP in Aug. 2001 and
Aug. 2017).
On June 9 vs. Houston, the Rangers tied a major league record with 6 hit by pitches, a feat that had been accomplished just
one other time since 1900. In Game 2 of a doubleheader on June 20, 1913, the New York Yankees were hit by pitches 6 times against
the Washington Senators at Griffith Stadium. Robinson Chirinos matched a club record with 19 HBP this season (also Carlos Gomez
in 2017), and trailed only Gomez (21 HBP for TB) among A.L. batters in 2018. Jurickson Profar finished T6th in the A.L. with 12 HBP,
including setting club records and matching a MLB single-game mark with 3 HBP in 2 separate games: June 9 vs. Houston and June
23 at Minnesota. According to baseball-reference.com, Profar joins Reed Johnson (TOR in 2006) as the only batters since at least
1908 with multiple games of 3 HBP in one season.
FEVER PITCH: On July 23 vs. Oakland, Carlos Tocci (0.2 IP) and Ryan Rua (1.0 IP) recorded the final 5 outs without allowing a
run in the Rangers’ 15-3 loss. It marked the 1st time in Rangers history for multiple position players to pitch in a single game, and
the only time in 2018 for the club to use position players on the mound. There have now been 16 instances of a position player
appearing on the mound for Texas, with 14 different players serving as pitchers.
Over the first 40 years in Rangers history from 1972-2011, there were a total of 4 instances/3 position players to pitch for the club,
including Jose Canseco’s infamous 5/29/93 outing at Fenway and Scott Sheldon’s one-batter faced appearance while playing all
9 positions on 9/6/00 at CWS. Since the start of 2012, however, the Rangers have used a position player to pitch at least once
in 7 consecutive seasons.
HOME RUNS: Texas batters hit 194 home runs, 8th-most in A.L. and club’s lowest total since 2015 (172). The total was 43 less
than club’s 2017 figure (237) and the 8th-place league finish matched the Rangers’ 2nd-lowest since 2001 (14th in 2014; 8th in 2006).
From July 17-Aug. 10, Texas hit an MLB-high 39 HR over the team’s 1st 21 G in the 2nd ‘half’ (1.86 HR/G), but would slug just
46 HR in the final 44 G beginning Aug. 11 (1.05 HR/G). Of those 46 HR in the final month-and-a-half, 11 came in a 3-G series vs.
Minnesota from Aug. 31-Sept. 2, most in a 3-G set since May 27-29, 2011 vs. KC (also 11).
Texas produced a season-best 13-game HR streak from April 27-May 9, and had 2 other streaks of 7 games each (April 11-18;
July 15-25). The 13-game run was T7th-longest in MLB this season, T3rd-longest in the A.L. The Rangers hit long balls in 15 consecutive
road games from April 3-May 2, 3rd-longest streak in MLB in 2018 (OAK-27 G; HOU-24 G) and the 6th-longest away span in club history.
Team did not hit a home run for a season-long 3 straight from Aug. 26-29, longest such span for Texas since Sept. 9-11, 2015 (3 G).
Texas had 6 players hit 18-or-more home runs for a 2nd straight year, 1st time the club has ever had so many batters clear that
mark in consecutive seasons. Joey Gallo (40 HR) became just the 4th player in franchise history to hit 40-or-more HR in back-to-back
seasons, joining Alex Rodriguez (2001-02-03), Rafael Palmeiro (2001-02), and Juan Gonzalez (1992-93; 1996-97-98). Texas had 17
different players overall hit HR in 2018, matching the team’s 2017 total.
Home Runs By Month: March-2; April-29; May-36; June-31; July-32; August-30; September-34.
Texas had 106 HR at home, 5th-most in the A.L. and team’s 2nd-highest total beginning 2013 (125 HR at home in 2017). Club’s
88 road HR were T4th-fewest in the league, lowest total since 2015 (80).
Texas homered at least once in 108 different games in 2018, this after setting club records in this category in back-to-back years
(128 in 2016, 129 in 2017). Team hit multiple HR in 50 games (70 in 2017), but Rangers’ 23 G with 3+ HR were 2nd-most for club since
2012 (27 in 2017). Batters’ 3 G with 5+ HR were the most by Texas since 2012 (4) and ranked T3rd in MLB to LAD (7) and NYY (4).
Rangers hit season-high 6 HR on Sept. 2 vs. Minnesota, most since April 17, 2012 at Boston (6 HR) and most in Arlington
since Aug. 20, 2008 vs. Detroit (6 HR). The club hit 3 different 2-R HR in the 6th inning of that game against the Twins, first time with
3 multi-run HR in the same inning since Aug. 22, 2012 vs. Baltimore.
The team hit 119 homers with the bases empty, 48 with one on, 23 with 2 aboard, and had 4 grand slams. The 4 slams were
2nd-most for Texas since 2012 (5 in 2016). Through May 15 of this season, Texas had an MLB-high 40 solo HR in the team’s 1st 43
games, but would hit just 79 solo jobs in the year’s final 119 contests. Beginning May 16, batters’ 92 HR with runners on base ranked
as 8th-best in MLB. Rangers had 10 games in which lone run came on a solo HR, T3rd-most in MLB, and club’s 32 such games since
the start of 2016 are easily most in MLB (next is 27 by TOR).
Texas scored just 40.7% of its runs on home runs this season (300 of 737), which ranked as 14th-highest pct. in MLB, this after
47.4% of runs on HR in 2017 (5th in MLB).
The offense saw one inside-the-park home run this season: Rougned Odor on July 28 at Houston. Team now has 3 in-
side-the-parkers in the past 2 seasons after one from 2014-16.
Texas produced back-to-back home runs on 5 occasions, T3rd-fewest in the A.L., but one more than in 2017 (4). Joey Gallo
and Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit back-to-back HR in the 12th inning on May 1 at Cleveland, just the 2nd instance of extra-inning back-to-
backs in team history (also Chris Davis/David Murphy in 12th on 6/25/09 at Arizona). On July 20 vs. Cleveland, Robinson Chirinos
and Joey Gallo homered on consecutive pitches from Cody Allen in the 9th inning to tie the game, 1st back-to-backs in 9th with club
trailing to tie or win a game since Aug. 14, 1999 at Chicago-AL (Palmeiro/Zeile off Bobby Howry).
Batters totaled 11 individual multi-homer games, T9th in A.L. and T12th in MLB. Joey Gallo (3) and Nomar Mazara (2) were
the only Rangers with more than one multi-HR effort.
Both Texas walk-off HR this season came in May by Nomar Mazara (May 9 vs. Detroit) and Shin-Soo Choo (May 26 vs. Kansas
City). Each of the Rangers’ last 4 game-ending HR have come in the month of May, last non-May instance was Aug. 30, 2016 vs.
Seattle (Rougned Odor off Edwin Diaz).
The 2018 Rangers had 123 HR by players in their age 25-or-younger season, 3rd-most in MLB history to the 2007 Brewers
(152) and 2017 Cubs (149).

7. Texas hit 130 of the club’s 194 HR within an at-bat’s 1st 3 pitches (67.0%), the 3rd-highest HR total in MLB in 2018 to only NYY (148)
and LAD (131). Team had an MLB-low 7 HR on full counts, this after a major league-leading 32 such HR in 2017, and 1st team since the
2015 Pirates (6) with so few HR on 3-2 counts. Marked fewest 3-2 HR for the Rangers since 1989 (4). Batters had 40 HR with 2 strikes,
2nd-lowest total in MLB (DET-37). Joey Gallo has both 3-0 HR by Rangers since the start of 2016: 4/21/17 vs. KC and 4/22/18 vs. SEA.
MONTH-BY-MONTH: March: 1-2; April: 10-17; May: 13-16; June: 14-11; July: 8-17; August: 12-14; September: 9-18. The
club’s one full month with a winning record (14-11 in June) marked fewest since 2003 (1). Finished under .500 in each of season’s final
3 months for first time since 1992. Team’s .320 win pct. in July was lowest in any month since July 2014 (.231, 6-20) and 3rd-lowest in
any month since the start of 2004 (also .310, 9-20 in May 2007). The .333 win pct. in September marked club’s lowest in final month
since 1988 (.321, 9-19).
PITCHING: Pitching staff compiled a 4.92 ERA (786 ER/1432.0 IP), 3rd-highest in the A.L./MLB, 10th-highest in club history,
and largest ERA for team since 2008 (5.37). Staff had a 4.61 ERA at the All-Star break, but club’s 5.39 ERA (343 ER/572.1 IP) in the
2nd ‘half’ was 2nd-highest in MLB (BAL-5.65). Lowest ERA after the end of April was a 4.60 mark following shutout win on July 8 at
Detroit, while high figure was a 5.03 mark after loss on Sept. 9 vs. Oakland.
Rangers’ 5 shutouts were 3rd-fewest in the A.L. (2-DET, 3-TOR), T7th-fewest in a full season in club history, lowest total since
2003 (3). Staff recorded MLB’s fewest strikeouts (1121) for a 2nd straight year. Staff allowed 222 HR, 3rd-most in MLB (BAL-234;
CIN-228) and tying a club record (also 2001). Pitchers allowed HR in 13 straight from May 31-June 15, T2nd-longest single-season
streak in team history and one shy of club record (14 G, April 19-May 2, 1996). Team allowed season-high 16 runs on July 21 vs.
Cleveland, as 3 of the team’s 4 highest run totals allowed in 2018 came in a 4-day span from July 21-24 against the Indians and A’s.
Mike Minor recorded a team-high 12 wins, the lone Texas pitcher with 9-or-more victories, matching a club record for fewest
pitchers with 9+ wins in a season (also 1972, 1973, 1985, 1994, 2007).
Starters: Texas starters combined to go 43-68 with a 5.37 ERA (505 ER/846.0 IP) in 2018, 2nd-highest ERA in A.L./MLB (BAL-
5.48). It was the 8th-highest starters ERA in a full season in Rangers history, highest since 2008 (5.51). Posted 50 quality starts,
2nd-fewest in A.L. (TB-39) and 4th-fewest in MLB, lowest total for the Rangers in any full season (previously 51 in 2003). Rotation’s
846.0 innings ranked 8th in A.L., but provided the 3rd-lowest total in a full season in team history (832.0 in 2003; 838.0 in 2007).
Staff issued just 277 walks, fewest in any full season in Rangers history. Had just 590 strikeouts, lowest total by any MLB
rotation, lowest for Texas since 2008 (527). Had a single complete game (Bartolo Colon on July 6 at Detroit).
Starters’ 43 wins were T8th-most in the A.L., but it was the 3rd-lowest figure in club history (excluding 1994) to only 1972 (38-
74) and 2007 (42-65). From June 27-Sept. 10, starters recorded 23 of the team’s 27 victories. Set a club record by allowing 148 home
runs (previously 147 HR in 2003), 3rd-most in MLB (BAL-159; CIN-151).
The starting pitcher figures were partially impacted by 5 September starts by an “opening” pitcher, one of the game’s newly-in-
troduced trends in which a reliever would start the game and face a limited number of batters before yielding to a “primary” pitcher.
The totals from those 5 starts by Jeffrey Springs (2), Connor Sadzeck (2), and Alex Claudio (1): 8.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 11 SO.
Relievers: The Rangers bullpen had a 24-27 record with a 4.28 ERA (278 ER/585.0 IP) in 161 games, 8th in the A.L. and low-
est since 2015 (4.09). Relievers’ 585.0 innings ranked as just 9th-most in the A.L., but provided 3rd-highest total in club history (601.1
in 2003; 592.0 in 2007). Bullpen ERA of 3.48 at the All-Star break ranked 4th in the A.L. and 7th in MLB, and was also lowest figure
for team after the end of April. Relief corps had a 5.29 ERA (151 ER/256.2 IP) in the 2nd ‘half’, 4th-highest in MLB, to finish at 4.28.
Relievers’ 531 strikeouts were 4th-fewest in the A.L. but set a club bullpen record (prev. 476 in 2003). Permitted 74 HR, 2nd-most in
team history (80 in 2001).
Staff converted 42 of 56 (75.0%) save opportunities, highest save percentage in MLB and T7th-highest single-season pct.
ever by the club. Last time the Rangers converted at such a high rate was 2016 (76.7%). Team’s 14 blown saves were tied with
Washington for fewest in MLB. Relievers totaled 90 holds, 5th-most in A.L. and 3rd-most in team history (103 in 2016; 94 in 2015).
PLAYERS USED/ROOKIES: The 2018 Rangers used 50 players, 9th in the A.L. and one less than 2017. Team used 32
pitchers, T5th-most in the league, this after 31 pitchers in 3 straight seasons from 2015-17 (MLB-record 41 pitchers used in 2014).
Club used 15 rookies, most since 18 in 2015, and saw 9 MLB debuts.
The list of 15 rookies: Willie Calhoun, Nick Gardewine, Ronald Guzmán, Ariel Jurado, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Brandon Mann, Yo-
hander Méndez, Renato Núñez, C.D. Pelham, Ricardo Rodríguez, Connor Sadzeck, Adrian Sampson, Jeffrey Springs, Carlos Tocci,
and Jose Trevino. The list of 9 rookies to make their ML debut: Guzmán, Jurado, Kiner-Falefa, Mann, Pelham, Sadzeck, Springs,
Tocci, Trevino.
On April 13 at Houston, both Guzmán (1B in ML debut) and Kiner-Falefa (2B) made their 1st major league starts, the 1st time
for a pair of Rangers to make 1st ML starts in the same game since Sept. 5, 1990 vs. Cleveland (P Scott Chiamparino and C Bill
Haselman – credit Elias Sports Bureau). Both recorded their 1st ML hits in that game, 1st time for 2 TEX batters to get 1st hits in same
game since Sept. 26, 2009 vs. Tampa Bay (Craig Gentry and Kevin Richardson).
SHUTOUTS: Club’s 5 shutouts were 3rd-fewest in the A.L. (2-DET, 3-TOR), T7th-fewest in a full season in Rangers history,
lowest total since 2003 (3). Lone home blanking came July 22 vs. Cleveland, matching fewest SHO at home in the Globe Life Park
era (also one in 2003). Team was blanked 12 times, T3rd-most in the A.L., 7th-most in club history and most since 2009 (13). Batters
were shut out 4 times in September, most in one month since Aug. 2016 (4).
Of those 4 September blankings, 3 came in Arlington, as Texas was shut out in 3 of its final 6 home games. Prior to the 1st of
those shutouts on Sept. 17 vs. Tampa Bay, the Rangers had a stretch of 106 consecutive home games without a shutout loss, longest
active streak in MLB, as Texas had been the last club to have been blanked at home in 2018. It marked just the 2nd time the Rangers
had ever been shut out 3 times in one homestand at Globe Life Park (also 4x, Sept. 12-20, 2009).
SPRING TRAINING: Texas posted a 8-22-3 record this spring, winning the exhibition finale on March 26 vs. Cincinnati to snap
an 8-game losing streak. Rangers finished with the fewest wins (8), most losses (22), and lowest win percentage (.267) of any MLB
team this spring. The 22 losses are the most ever by Texas in a single spring. Six of the team’s 8 spring wins came in Surprise, as
club was 1-13-1 in games away from Surprise in Arizona, losing final 11 straight such games. Rangers finished with an MLB-low 2
road wins this spring, as one of the road wins came against the Royals in Surprise.
STREAKS: Team won a season-high 7 straight from June 16-23, and only other win streak longer than 3 games came in 4-0
stretch from July 27-30. That 7-game win streak was preceded by the club’s longest losing skid in 2018, an 0-7 span from June 7-15.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, the 2018 Rangers became just the 5th team since 2000 to win 7+ straight games immediately
following a losing streak of 7+ games. The others: 2014 BOS (10 L’s, 7 W’s), 2008 LAD (8/8), 2006 LAD (8/11), and 2001 CHC (8/12).
It had happened just once previously in WAS/TEX franchise history: 1991, 0-8 from 6/1-10; 7-0 from 6/11-17.
TIME OF GAME: Texas 9-inning games averaged 3 hours, 0 minutes, and 53 seconds in 2018 (3:00:53), a drop of nearly 10
full minutes from 2017 (3:10:24). The 2018 campaign marked the first season with limited mound visits as part of MLB’s efforts to
improve the pace of play. The Rangers’ 11 regulation games lasting 3:30-or-longer were 16 fewer than in 2017 (27), and team had
just 5 nine-inning contests of at least 3:45, 9 less than last season (14).
Rangers’ longest game of the season was a 4:48 affair on July 20 vs. Cleveland, a 9-8 Texas loss in 11 innings. The Tribe
was also the opponent for the team’s longest 9-inning contest in 2018, a 7-5 loss on April 30 at Cleveland (3:56). The club’s shortest
contest was a 2:05 game on July 6 at Detroit, the fastest Texas game since June 6, 2012 at Oakland (2:04). It was also one of the
3 fastest games in MLB in 2018: 2:00 on 7/1, KC at SEA; and 2:05 on 4/17, SF at ARI. It matched the shortest MLB game involving
multiple runs since the start of 2016 (also SF at CHC, 5/23/17 – 2:05).
UNIFORMS: Texas once again wore 6 uniform combinations in 2018, along with a second
RANGERS RECORD
year of Players Weekend uniforms this season. The team did not wear any kind of throwback

Rangers wore red tops just 7 times through the end of July, then wore them 13 times from Aug. 2-Sept. 3. Team lost each of
final 7 games wearing gray jerseys beginning July 31. In white jerseys/blue hats, team opened the year 0-8 before winning 5 of next 7
from May 26-June 30, then lost 6 of last 7 games with that combination. Club won 5 straight in blue tops from June 16-23 (home and
road), longest win streak in any combination all season, although Texas was 6-1 over a 7-G span in red jerseys from July 22-Aug. 13.
