New Diagram) : 1. Explain Binding & Unbinding

This document outlines the steps for 6 labs introducing power flow analysis using PSS/E software. Lab 1 covers opening PSS/E, loading case files, and explaining key components like buses, branches, loads and generators. Lab 2 demonstrates creating a 1-line diagram and slider file to model system components and growth. Lab 3 practices switching lines in and out and solving to observe flows. Lab 4 generates ACCC reports to compare results from outages. Lab 5 modifies monitoring files and re-runs ACCC reports. Lab 6 adds load and generation by splitting a line, adding a bus, transformer and wind farm.

Manual/Lab Outline **This outline is subject to change**

Lab1 – Introduction to PSS/E

• Brief explanation of PSS/E (PSS/E Online documentation can be used for this –
contents.pdf in the senior design folder)
1. Power Flow
2. Dynamics
• How to open PSS/E – Include the use of a USB Key
1. Set Bus # & Restart PSS/E
• Brief explanation of file types (*.sav, *.raw, *.sld, *.idv, *.txt, *.dat)
1. Include the purpose and usage with PSS/E
• How to load a Case - Include name of data file (*.sav)
• Explain Tabs (will cover 6 out of 19 tabs)
1. Buses – Bus #, Bus name, kV, Per unit, Code/Type
2. Branches – From # & name, to # & names, length, R(resistance),
X(impedance), B(charge impedance), rate in MVA
3. Loads – Name, #, ID, service status, Pload, Qload
4. Machines – Name, #, ID, service status, Pgen, Pmin, Pmax, Qgen, Qmin, Qmax
5. 2-winding X-FMR – From # & name/kV, to # & name/kV, service status
6. Switch shunts – name, #, kV, remote buss #/VHi/VLow, Binit, Blocks x # steps
• Request information to be extracted and compiled from the data file (*.sav)

Lab2 – 1-Line Diagram/Creating a slider file

• Open PSS/E
• Load data file (*.sav)
• Explain elements of 1-Line diagram
1. Buses, Branches, Transformers, Reactors, Loads, etc.
• Load new slider (file new diagram)
1. Set auto draw – select auto draw button
• Load bus - Double click on bus in data file
1. Make sure bus is a line – right click on bus and select toggle bus symbol
• Grow
1. Right Click select “Grow”
2. Select button in toolbar
• Grow out to a total of 10 Buses & Save
1. Explain Binding & Unbinding
2. The use of knees
3. Adding line load %
