*****READ CAREFULLY*****
Plagiarism is the presentation by a student of a laboratory report which has in fact
been copied in whole or in part from another student’s work, or from any other
source (e.g. published books or periodicals), without due acknowledgment in the
text.
Collusion is the presentation by a student of a laboratory report as his or her own
which is in fact the result in whole or in part of an unauthorised collaboration with
another person or persons.
DECLARATION
I/We declare that this laboratory report is my/our own work and
does not involve plagiarism or unauthorized collusion.

Abstract - The Summary

(~1/2 page) provides a brief overview of the substance of the report. States the topic
of the report, outlines the most important findings of your investigation, states the
key conclusions.

1 Introduction
Normal Style in this template has been set at Times New Roman size 12, justified
(even edges left and right), and line spacing is 1.5. To change the style of font for
Normal, follow these instructions:
 (List Paragraph Style is Times New Roman size 12, justified (even edges
left and right), and line spacing is 1.15) Change some of the existing text to
the font settings you require and drag your mouse across it to select it (will
show with grey background).
 In the Home Tab go to the Styles group.
 Right-click on Normal and select Update Normal to Match Selection.

2 Aims (problem statement, objective)

Clearly states the aims of the study (to measure, to devise, to design, to establish,
to identify, to determine, etc). If there is a general aim, try to establish a number of
specific aims as well. Aims can also be incorporated in the Introduction.
3 Background and literature review

4 Equipment
Show the equipment (real photo from our lab) and explain each part (real photo
from our lab). Example
Consolidation Cell of Oedometer Apparatus SL250 tester
The fixed ring type consolidation cell consists of the following parts 1. Anodized
Aluminium Base with Acrylic Cylinder 2. Stainless Steel Pressure Pad 3. Upper
Bauxalite Stone 4. Lower Bauxalite Stone 5. Stainless Steel Cutting Ring 6. Top
Ring. Need load (2kg, 5kg, …..), stop watch, etc.
5 Methodology (Procedure)
Outlines how the project will be undertaken (by conducting a series of experiments;
by developing a model; by conducting a survey of engineering practice; by reading
and critically reviewing a number of research papers; by doing fieldwork; etc).
The process used to collect information and data for the purpose of making business
decisions. The methodology may include publication research, interviews, surveys
and other research techniques, and could include both present and historical
information.
What are the types of methodology?
• Basic research [edit] this research is conducted largely for the enhancement
of knowledge, and is research which does not have immediate commercial
potential. ...
• Applied Research [edit] ...
• Problem oriented research[edit] ...
• Problem solving[edit] ...
• Quantitative Research[edit] ..
• Qualitative Research[edit]
Example: According to NZS (number) : Year, …..
6 Results (calculations)
Explain and show the results
Example of lab results:
Following are the results of a laboratory consolidation test on a soil specimen of clay obtained
from the field:
Dry mass of specimen (Ms)= 108.6 g
Height of specimen at the beginning of the test (H) = 19.6 mm,
Specific gravity of particles, Gs = 2.66
Final water content, wf (%) = 31.5
Sample diameter, d = 75 mm,
Area of the specimen (A) = 38.465cm2 or 0.003847m2
The load being held constant for 24 hr before the addition of the next increment.
Time Settlement
t (min) Dial (mm)
0 0
0.04 0.121
0.25 0.233
0.5 0.302
1 0.39
2.25 0.551
4 0.706
6.25 0.859
9 0.97
12.25 1.065

25 1.205
36 1.251

100 1.327

Day 1 2 3 4 5 6
Applied effective stress, σ' (kPa): 0 25 50 100 200 400 800
Sample thickness, h (mm): 19.6 19.25 18.98 18.61 18.14 17.68 17.24

At the end of the last load period the load was removed and the sample allowed to expand for
24 hr, at the end of which time its thickness was 17.92 mm.
(a) Make necessary calculations and draw an e versus log σ' curve and from it determine
the compressibility index (Cc) and the preconsolidation pressure.
(b) A soil profile is shown in figure below If a uniformly distributed load, Δσ', is applied
at the ground surface, what is the settlement of the clay layer caused by primary
consolidation if 1) The clay is normally consolidated. 2) The preconsolidation pressure
Δσ'c = 200 kN/m2. 3) Δσ'c =150 kN/m2
7 Evaluation of the results (engineering sense)
The analysis of the results show the following (King, 2018)
1. The typical results of almost similar type of soil. Based on “book” or website.

Table 1 Evaluation of the results (Show references)

Item Investigated Research Comment

(Lab)

are same, , , within acceptable range,
, , very big difference.
