Problem Set No.3 - Shear

This document contains instructions for Problem Set #3 in a Reinforced Concrete Design course. It instructs students to box their final answers, include units and solutions for each multi-part question. The two questions assess students' abilities to calculate nominal shear strength of a concrete beam considering different load cases, and to compute factored shear load and required web reinforcement shear capacity at a critical beam section. Students are asked to sign the document before submitting to confirm they understand and agree to follow the instructions.

Problem Set #3

NAME : _________________________
Schedule: ________________________

Instructions:
- BOX and write your final answer/s before each
question.
- All answer shall have a corresponding units and
solution.

I understand all the instructions and agreed to follow all

that are stated. Signature: ______________

Note: Please sign before you submit or it will not be

accepted.

(3pts each)
1. A concrete beam section with f’c = 25 MPa is
350mm wide, 500mm deep has a 435 mm
effective depth. It is reinforced with 1902mm2 of
tension steel with fyt=275MPa. Using the more
detailed calculations the 2010 NSCP, determine
the nominal shear strength of the concrete
considering the following cases:
a. Vu = 270KN, Mu = 100KN-m
b. Vu = 270KN, Mu = 100KN-m and axial
compression Nu = 180KN
c. Vu = 270KN, Mu = 100Kn-m and axial
tension Nu = 180KN
2. A reinforced concrete beam has b = 420 mm and
d= 640mm. The beam is simply supported on a
clear span of 5.75m and loaded with a uniform
service dead load of 62 KN/m and a service load
of 85 KN/m. The concrete strength f’c 27.6MPa.
Use 2010 NSCP
a. Calculate the factored uniform load, in
kiloNewtons per meter:
b. Compute the factored shear at the critical
section due to the factored load
c. Find the nominal shear, in KN, that has to be
provided by the web reinforcement at the
critical section for shear.
