What We Did, What’s Coming Up:
Language Arts:
Our shared reading this week was the book Gossie by Olivier Dunrea. Our high frequency word
this week was: is. We worked on the letters H, E, and F.
Our focus read aloud this week When Sophie Gets Angry, Really Angry… by Molly Bang.
Our writer’s workshop mentor text this week was City Signs by Zoran Milich. We labeled different
objects around our classroom with its written name. We began to write about our favorite
places to go and to label parts of our pictures.
Math:
This week in math, we were introduced to measurement collections. In these collections are materials that we use daily:
pencil, marker, crayon, watercolor brush, geoblock, etc. We built a measurement stick with snap cubes that was 10 cubes
tall. Our task was to measure the items in the measurement collection to decide if they were taller or shorter than our
measurement stick. We were also introduced to a variation of the activity Grab and Count which is Grab and Compare.
With this activity, we had to grab one color snap cube with our right hand and another color snap cube with our left hand.
Then we had to count each pile and decide which was bigger and which was smaller. We played the game Monster Roll
and Color which has us working on subitizing (ability to see how many dots are on the dice without having to count) and
matching it with its corresponding numeral.
Content:
This week, we began to discuss the fall season and what takes place during it. We learned that fall comes after summer. In
the fall, leaves begin to turn various colors and then begin to drop off the trees. People start to wear longer sleeves, light
jackets, and long pants. The weather begins to get cooler and the precipitation we see is rain. Animals are beginning to ge
ready for winter by collecting food and starting to migrate to warmer places. We also got to investigate a leaf that we
collected from outside and a pine cone. Using magnifying glasses, we looked carefully at the details and patterns on both
the leaves and pine cones. We drew detailed pictures and chose to color them with crayon or watercolors. Next week we
will discuss living and nonliving things and begin to talk about life cycles of plants.
Tuesday 10/16 Thank you so much to our volunteers who have signed up to
P.E. & Art help with our class celebrations! We still have two available
positions for our upcoming Fall Party on October 26th to run a
Wednesday 10/17 games center.
