Aerodynamics Assignment

This document appears to be an assignment from the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies for a 5th semester Aerospace Engineering course. It contains 7 questions related to aerodynamics at different levels of complexity. The questions cover topics like Biot-Savart law, Helmholtz's theorem, horseshoe vortex, lifting line theory, induced drag, circulation, geometric angle of attack, the wing design of historic aircraft like the Supermarine Spitfire and Concorde, and Prandtl's lifting line theory. ASSIGNMENT-II
V Semester
August 2018 - December 2018
Date of Submission: 28th September 2018
Max. Marks: 25

S. No. QUESTIONS CO Knowledge

Level
1 Explain the following with relevant sketches and expressions, CO3 L1
 Biot Savart Law by using Vortex filament
 Helmholtz’s theorem
 Horse Shoe Vortex
2 1. Justify the statement, “the geometric angle of attack is equal to sum of the effective CO3 L2
angle plus the induced angle of attack using lifting line theory”.

3 The Supermarine Spitfire is a famous British World War II fighter aircraft. Find out CO3 L3
the wing planform of Supermarine Spitfire and calculate the induced drag and
induced angle of attack.
4 An airplane weighing 73.6 kN has elliptic wings 15.23m in span. For a speed of 90 CO3 L2
m/s in straight and level flight at low altitude find
(a) the induced drag;
(b) the circulation around sections halfway along the wings.
5 2. The Piper Cherokee (a light, single-engine general aviation aircraft) has a wing area CO3 L2
of 15.8 m2 and a wing span of 9.75 m. Its maximum gross weight is 10900N. The
wing uses an NACA 65-415 aerofoil, which has a lift slope of 0.1033 degree-1 and
α L=0=-3 degree. Assume τ = 0.12. If the airplane is cursing at 53.64 m/s at standard
sea level at its maximum gross weight and is in straight and level flight, calculate
the geometric angle of attack of the wing.

6 The Concorde is a British-French modified delta wing supersonic passenger CO3 L3

airliner. Explain the reason for its very high angle of attack during landing.

7 Derive the expression for span efficiency factor, e in general lift distribution using CO3 L2
Prandtl’s classical lifting line theory.
