A p o l l o 13 - a h a p p y ending!
You probably know about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin - the
first men on the Moon. They landed there in the spacecraft
Apollo 11 on July 20,1969. 600 million people watched them!
But did you know that other Apollo missions went to the Moon?
In fact, Apollo 13 was nearly a disaster.
\ г -•
Apollo 13 left Florida, USA on April 11,1970. It had two parts -
the Command Module and the Lunar Module. There were three * V
astronauts - Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert. One man,
Ken Mattingly, didn't go because he was ill.
After two days, on April 13, there was an explosion. It damaged
the Command Module. The astronauts were in danger. They told
Mission Control, 'We have a problem here.' There was only enough
air for 15 minutes! So they moved to the Lunar Module.
In the Lunar Module there wasn't much power, food, water or air.
They couldn't breathe, because the air was bad. But they repaired
the oxygen container with a plastic bag and a sock! They could
breathe again.
Now they had one big problem. They were 321,800 kilometres
from Earth and they didn't have enough power to get back.
Mission Control decided to send the astronauts towards the
Moon. Then gravity could pull the spacecraft back to Earth
without power.
It was a race against time. Back on Earth Ken Mattingly saved his ,4r •• - ц. Щ а ш

friends' lives, too. The astronauts couldn't use their computers so

Ken guided them to Earth. It was very dangerous. But they landed

Come to the Cambridge Film Festival and see aliens from films like E.T. and Avatar! There are
exciting film workshops for 8 to 16 year-olds. You can learn how to do special effects and make-
| up to create your own film alien. Then you can watch your creation on screen.

С A very strange world

Alice in Wonderland is one of the strangest and funniest stories ever. There are talking animals,
the Mad Hatter (a mad hat-maker) and the horrible Queen of Hearts. The Cambridge Touring
Theatre are performing it every evening in the gardens of Wimpole Hall.
11л I

Where can you buy CDs and DVDs, cool clothes, mobile phone accessories, jewellery, books
and even second-hand bikes - all in one place? At the Cambridge market on Saturday from
10 am to 4 pm.

E Come to the fair!

This Saturday is the famous Strawberry Fair, one of the largest free festivals in Europe! At
11 am there is a parade through the city centre. The fair begins at twelve o'clock when the
parade arrives at Midsummer Common. There are lots of different types of music and there are
also films, a circus, and face-painting! You can buy interesting things at the market stalls, and
you can eat food from all around the world.

F And don't forget the time!

Do you want to know the time? Then you mustn't miss the fabulous 'Grasshopper Clock'. It took
seven years and 200 people to make it. Watch the giant insect eat time. It's scary!

2 David Beckham b helps poor children in Colombia,
3 Florence Nightingale с fights crime.
4 Leon's neighbour d started a charity that gives wheelchairs to children,
5 Shakira e does small jobs for people.

What do you think of when you see the word h ' ero? ' Do you think of superheroes such
as Spd i er-Man or Superman? Or perhaps you think of famous peope l from the past like
Fol rence Nightingale or Prn i cess Dai na. A hero usualy hep l s people. Or he or she does )
somethn i g good for a communtiy. For exampe l , Spdi er-Man fights crime. And Fo l rence
Nightingale saved the lives of lots of peope l in hospitals in the nineteenth century.
Unfortunately, for lots of peope l today, their heroes are celebrities. These celebrities
are famous because they are film stars or pop stars, or just because they are beautiful
and appear on TV! In my opinion, they aren't real heroes. But some celebrities can be
heroes and good role modesl. For exampe l , Davdi Beckham is a famous footballer and
Shakria is a singer. But they both do work for UNC I EF, an international charity that
hepl s children. Beckham asl o started a charity that gvi es wheecl haris to children.
Shakria started a charity that provd i es special schoosl for poor children in Coo l mba i.
Theri work m i proves the lives of many children all over the world.
Heroes can be young or old. And they can come from any country. They can do
important things to m i prove the lives of thousands of people. Or they can do smal
things that hep l onyl a few people.
