After reading this chapter, the students should be able to:
ü Explain the functions of freight forwarders
ü Discuss the reasons why we need freight forwarders

Key Teaching Points


Key Terminology
Freight Forwarder: An organization that specializes in arranging storage and shipping of merchandise
on behalf of its shippers. A forwarder provides a full range of services (but not limited to) like track
& trace, shipping import and export documents, warehousing, , sea and air freight charges, freight
consolidation, cargo insurance purchases and filing of insurance claims.

Teaching Tip: The instructor is highly encouraged to print and distribute handouts of the FMFF Standard
Term and Condition (STC). Please allow the students to discuss among themselves why the STC is
important to protect the forwarder’s interests.

Why Do Freight Forwarders Still Exist in Malaysia?


To highlight to students the reasons of the freight forwarders existence
ü As an advisor for the best routing and relative shipping cost
ü As a booking agent for shipping, trucking or airline
ü As an arranger with the exporter to pack and mark the goods
ü As a consolidation agent
ü As a customs clearance agent
ü As a marine insurance negotiator
ü As an import/export documentation agent
ü As Letter of credit compliance agent

Teaching Tip: The instructor is encouraged to do a ‘pop quiz’ for Chapter 1 to Chapter 5. Marks and points
can be given based on the guided policy of the university/polytechnics marking scheme that has been
agreed upon.

Teaching Tip: The instructor should allow discussion on the dependency of Malaysia towards freight
forwarders.

from Malaysia.
