Key Terminologies
Shipping marks: information about consignee of the cargo

Information marks: information about the cargo

Dangerous goods (DG): all cargo that falls under Class 1 to Class9

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS): a sheet of paper that explains the properties of the dangerous
cargo and how to handle them

Teaching Tip: The instructor is highly encouraged to download and show to the class a video clip about
the Inside FedEx Memphis ‘Super Hub’. This is an educational video of how FedEx handles millions of
packages per day at its super hub in Memphis. If packaging is not tight, then we can’t expect packages to

Packing of Goods
In a normal situation, packaging is important as it serves 4 basic functions:
ü Cargo Protection against major issues like theft and damages during storage nor transportation
ü Content Preservation against rotting, exposure towards moisture, high & low temperatures,
insects, gases etc.
ü Presentation of its ingredients, shapes, colours and also for buyers attraction
ü Company Promotion or selling the name of the company

The Marks on the Packages


ü Shipping marks
ü Information marks
ü DG cargo marks

Teaching Tip: The instructor should allow students to gather examples of information marks and explain its
importance to the students. The students are then tested on their knowledge of the normal marks that are
seen on packages.

DG Cargo marks
There are 9 classes of DG which is in use today:
1 Class 1 – Explosive
2 Class 2 – Gasses, compressed, liquefied or dissolved under pressure
3 Class 3 – Flammable liquids
4 Class 4.1 – Flammable solids
5 Class 4.2 – Substance with spontaneous combustion
6 Class 4.3 – Substance which when contacted with water, emit flammable gasses
7 Class 5.1 – Oxidizing substance
8 Class 5.2 – Organic Peroxide
9 Class 6.1 – Poisonous (toxic) substances
10 Class 6.2 – Infectious substances
11 Class 7 – Radioactive materials
12 Class 8 – Corrosive
13 Class 9 – Miscellaneous substances

Teaching Tip: The students are expected to know all the classes and its symbols.

Teaching Tip: Use the Power point in Chapter 7 for visual aid.

Teaching Tip: The students are encouraged to answer the multiple choice questions that are readily
available in the companion website.
