Geomatics

Geomatics is the discipline of gathering, storing, processing, and delivering geographic information or spatially referenced information. It involves the acquisition, interpretation, management and representation of geospatial data. Geomatics engineering focuses on spatial information and applies engineering principles to spatial data. Geomatics also relates to geospatial science, which incorporates fields like surveying, GIS, and cartography concerned with measuring, managing, analyzing and displaying spatial information about the Earth. Important areas of study in geomatics include GPS, GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry, and land surveying.

What is Geomatics?
Geomatics (including geomatics engineering), also known as surveying engineering or
geospatial science (including geospatial engineering and geospatial technology), is the
discipline of gathering, storing, processing, and delivering geographic information or
spatially referenced information. In other words, it "consists of products, services and tools
involved in the collection, integration and management of geographic data".
Porpose of Geomatics
Geomatics is a broad discipline of study of Geospatial information. More specifically it has
to do with the acquisition, interpretation, management and representation of Geospatial
data.
Relation with Engineering
Geomatics Engineering, Geomatic Engineering, Geospatial Engineering is a rapidly
developing engineering discipline that focuses on spatial information (i.e. information that
has a location). The location is the primary factor used to integrate a very wide range of
data for spatial analysis and visualization. Geomatics engineers apply engineering
principles to spatial information and implement relational data structures involving
measurement sciences, thus using geomatics and acting as spatial information engineers.
Geomatics engineers manage local, regional, national and global spatial data
infrastructures. Geomatics Engineering also involves aspects of Computer Engineering,
Software Engineering and Civil Engineering.
Relation with Science
Geospatial science is an academic discipline incorporating fields such as surveying,
geographic information systems, hydrography and cartography. Spatial science is typically
concerned with the measurement, management, analysis and display of spatial
information describing the Earth, its physical features and the built environment.
Importance of geomatics
The world of geomatics is very exciting. Careers in geomatics are challenging, diverse,
interesting, and there are many areas of specialization. Areas of specialization include:
Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and science; Geographic Information
Systems (GIS); Hydrographic Surveying (ocean mapping and navigation);
Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (satellite imagery); Optical Tooling (for precise
alignmentof equipment); andCadastralLandSurveying
There are many geomatics professionals in government, the military, and small and large
private industries including engineering firms and local surveying companies.
