1. The Ponchon-Savarit method was used to separate a mixture of 40 mol% benzene and 60 mol% toluene by distillation at atmospheric pressure into products with 98% purity. 2. For a feed entering at 25°C, the minimum reflux ratio was calculated to be 1.336 using the McCabe-Thiele method. The Ponchon-Savarit method determined 14 equilibrium stages were needed. 3. When the feed entered at its boiling point of 95.5°C, the same minimum reflux ratio of 1.336 and 14 stages were calculated. 4. For a feed at 100°C, the minimum reflux ratio

Distillation using Ponchon-Savarit Method

Problem 1

A mixture of 40 mol% benzene and 60 mol% toluene is to be separated by distillation at

atmospheric pressure into products of 98% purity using a reflux ratio two times the minimum
value. If the feed enters at (a) 25°C, (b) at its boiling temperature and (c) 100°C, determine

a. Minimum reflux ratio (using McCabe-Thiele Method)

b. Feed condition and q-value
c. Number of equilibrium stages required for the separation (Ponchon-Savarit Method)
d. Reboiler duty
e. Condenser duty

Given:

QC

D
XDB = 0.98
F XDT = 0.02
XFB = 0.4
XFT = 0.6

B
XBB = 0.02
QR
XBT = 0.98
Calculations with Procedure

I. Condition: Feed enters at 25℃

1. Open Microsoft Excel

2. Plot the equilibrium curve and the 45-degree line
Equilibrium curve and 45-degree line plot

3. Determine the equation of the equilibrium curve.

Finding Equilibrium Curve Equation using Trendline

4. Get the different enthalpies of the mixture at different condition. Then determine the value
of the q and get its equation.

Fsubcooled Fsat’d liquid Fsat’d vapor

Solving for value of q:

(H fB - H iB ) ( x fB )  (H fT - H iT ) ( x fT )
q
(H fB - H mB ) ( x fB )  (H fT - H mT ) ( x fT )

( 32.2271 7.7396024)( 0.4 )  ( 31.3739  14.258)( 0.6 )

q
( 32.2271- 2.293423)( 0.4 )  ( 31.3739+2.7587355)( 0.6 )

q =1.33626

Feed condition:

Subcooled liquid since q>1

For q-line:
q x
y x- f
q -1 q -1
1.33626
y x  - 0.4
1.33626- 1 1.33626- 1
y = 3.9739x - 1.1895
5. Calculate the Rmin using the following equations:
R min
M min  Eq. (1)
R min  1

yD  yA
M min  Eq. (2)
xD  xA

Combine the two equations to get Rmin:

Eq. (3)

The intersection of the equilibrium line and the q line are described as the YD and YA.
Equating the equation of the equil curve and the q line will give the values of xA and YA.

y-x curve for B and T eq: y  - 0.4179x4  1.493x3 - 2.3611x2  2.2859x eq. (a)

q-line: y = 3.9739x - 1.1895 eq. (b)

Solving for equations (a) and (b) simultaneously, we get:

xA = 0.472989833 yA = 0.690051412

Finally, solve Rmin using Eq. (3)

R min y  yA
 D
R min  1 x D  x A

R min  1.335789546
6. In the determination of the number of stage using Ponchon-Savarit Method, the first thing
to do is plot the values of the enthalpy and concentration at a different temperature. Using
the values from Geankoplis\
The equations in enthalpy-concentration diagram will be used to get the values of H_l and H_v at
x_d = 0.98.

The calculated enthalpies will then use to get the value of H_l + QC/d

For the operating line, plot the value of xD with the y you obtained from the previous figure.

Using solver, solve for the values of H_l line and H_v line.
Plot the H_l line and H_v line.
Plot the number of stages.

Plot the operating line, H_l and H_v line and the number of stages.
We obtain the number of stages N=14.
7. Condenser duty and Reboiler Duty

II. At boiling point = 95.5°C

The same procedure is followed, graph the phase equilibrium diagram then get the equations

1. Since the feed is saturated liquid, therefore q = 1.

2. In finding the Rmin

y-x curve for B and T eq: y  - 0.4179x4  1.493x3 - 2.3611x2  2.2859x

q = vertical line

Taking the y component of the q line, and substituting it to equation (3)

Rmin = 1.618652026
3. Plotting the enthalpy-concentration diagram and solving for the operating line.
Using solver, solve for the values of H_l line and H_v line.

Plot the H_l line and H_v line.

Plot the number of stages

Plot the operating line, H_l and H_v line and the number of stages.
We obtain the number of stages N=14.

4. Condenser and Reboiler Duty

III. At 100°C
The same procedure graph the phase equilibrium diagram then get the equations
1. To get the q value plot the temperature-concentration graph of benzene-toluene then use
lever rule.

n vap c b

n liq b a
n vap
q 
n vap  n liq
Therefore, q is partially vaporized
2. In finding the Rmin
y-x curve for B and T eq: y  - 0.4179x4  1.493x3 - 2.3611x2  2.2859x

q line : y = -2.4456x + 1.3782

From equation (3) we obtain the value of Rmin,

3. Plotting the enthalpy-concentration and operating line.
