Heat of Combustion
Objectives:
In this experiment, calculate the heat of combustion of the sample. Also determine the
molar enthalpy change, ΔH, for the combustion of Benzoic acid and also the unknown. From
literature, the ΔH of benzoic acid is said to be -384.8 ± 0.50 KH/mol. Convert it to cal/g as required
unit for ΔH in the table. So the converted ΔH is now -754.4353196 Cal/g and using the formula
ΔH=CvΔT to acquire the value of its Cv. Both Benzoic acid and the unknown sample has the same
𝐶𝑣∆T−Es−En−Efe
value of Cv in cal/ ºC. Using the equation ( ) to calculate the ΔH of the unknown.

Abstract:
The experiment was conducted to determine the heat capacity of the calorimeter
assembly considering all necessary corrections and to calculate the gross heat of combustion in
cal/g of the unknown sample using the given equation. The data gathered through this
experiment were -280.3310455 cal/ ºC heat capacity for both unknown sample and benzoic acid,
--754.4353196 cal/g , -793.0641019cal/g heat of combustion for benzoic acid and unknown
sample respectively.
