HW 2 PRD

The document contains 7 math problems involving unit conversions between metric and US customary units as well as significant figures. It provides the questions, steps to solve, and answers. The problems cover converting between feet and hands to measure horse height, converting hectares to acres in a square mile, calculating areas and volumes of spheres using different units, converting between pressure units of psi and Pascals, calculating with significant figures, and determining the number of significant figures to report a drill bit diameter measurement.

3.

The height of horses from the ground to their shoulder is still measured in the old unit of
hands. There are 16 hands in a fathom and 6.0 feet in a fathom. How many feet high is a
horse that is 13 hands tall? (A: 4.9 ft)
Answer :
h= horse high in feet

16 hands = 13 hands
6 ft h

h= 13hands x 6 ft
16 hands
h=4.875 ft
h=4.9 ft

4. An acre originally was defined as the amount of land that an oxen team could plow in a day.
Suppose a
team could plow 0.4 hectare per day, where a hectare is 104 m2. There are 1609 meters in a
mile. How
many acres are there in a square mile?
Answer :
a) 0.4 hectare = 0.4 hectare x 10000m2 = 4000m2
1hectare

b) 4000m2 x (1 mil ) 2 = 1.5 x 10-3 mil2 = 2 x 10-3

(1609m)2

So, an acres in the square mile is 2 x 10-3

5. There are 39 inches in a meter. What is the area in the SI system of the skin of a spherical
orange that is
4.0 inches in diameter? (A: 3.3 x 10-2 m2)
Answer :
4 inches = 4 inches x 1 meter = 0.1 m
39inches

Area in the SI system of the skin of a spherical orange is :

4πr2 = 4π(d/2)2
= 4 x 3.14 x (0.1)2 = 3.3 x 10-2 m2
(2)2

6. There are 39 inches in a meter. What is the volume in the Engineering English system of a
spherical
apple that is 10. cm (note the decimal point here) in diameter?
Answer :
d = 10.cm
r = 50 x 10-1cm
1 meter = 39inches
m3= (39inch)3

Volume = 4πr3
3 V = 52 x 10-5 m3 x (39inch)3
= 4π (50 x 10-1)3 m3
3
= 523333,3 x 10-3 cm3 V = 5.2 x 10-4 x 59319 inch3
= 520cm3 V = 30.8 inch3
= 520 x 10-6m3 V = 31 inch3
= 52 x 10-5m3

7. If the pressure in the tire on your car is 32.0 lbf/in2 (or psi), what is its pressure in SI units?
Answer :
1 lbf/in2 = 6895 Pa

Pressure = 32.0 lbf/in2 x 6895 Pa

1 lbf/in2

= 220640 Pa
= 221 x 103 Pa

23. Calculate with the correct significant figures: (a) 100/(2.0 x102), (b) (1.0 x 102)/(2.0 x 102).
(A: 0.5, 0.50)
Answer :
(a) 100 = 50 = 1 = 5 x 10-1 = 0.5
2.0 x 10 2 100 2

(b) 1.0 x 102 = 100 = 50 = 0.50

2.0 x 102 200 100

24. Calculate with the correct significant figures: (a) 10/6, (b) 10.0/6, (c) 10/6.0, (d) 10./6.0, (e)
10.0/6.00.
Answer :
(a) 10 = 2
6
(b) 10.0 = 2
6

(c) 10 = 2
6.0

(d) 10. = 1.7

6.0

(e) 10.0 =1.67

6.00

25. What is 2.68 x 108 minus 2.33 x 103 to the correct significant figures? (A: 2.68 x 108)
Answer :
2.68 x 108 – 2.33 x 103
= 2.68 x 103 x 105 – 2.33 x 103
= 103 (2.68 x 105 – 2.33)

Pengurangan 2.68 x 105 dengan 2.33 hanya mengurangi satuan dari 2.68 x 105
sehingga apabila dibulatkan akan tetap menjadi 2.68 x 105
Maka,
= 103 (2.68 x 105 – 2.33)
= 103 (2.68 x 105)
= 2.68 x 108

26. A machinist has a sophisticated micrometer that can measure the diameter of a drill bit to
1/10,000 of an
inch. What is the maximum number of significant figures that should be reported if the
approximate
diameter of the drill bit is: (a) 0.0001 inches, (b) 0.1 inches, (c) 1 inch?
Answer :
a) 0.0001 inches = 0.00010 inch
b) 0.1 inches = 0.10000 inch
c) 1 inches = 1.00000 inch

27. Round off to three significant places: 1.53, 15.345, 16.67, 102.04, -124.7, and 0.00123456.
Answer :
(a) 1.53
(b) 15.3
(c) 16.7
(d) 102
(e) -125
(f) 0.00123
