Maggots: The Physical Observation of Their Existence

The document summarizes an experiment observing maggots in three jars with meat over five days. Jar A had no lid and developed the most maggots. Jar B was covered with gauze and also grew maggots. Jar C had a sealed lid and no maggots. The observation shows that maggots develop when flies have access to lay eggs on rotten food.

MAGGOTS: THE PHYSICAL

OBSERVATION OF THEIR
EXISTENCE

Introduction
On a daily basis, maggots are present in the things or
foods that are rotten. According to Dengarden, a maggot is the
larvae of a fly. The fly lays eggs, which turn into maggots.
"Maggot" is another word for larva. After a pupal stage,
maggots turn into flies. Sometimes, it may seem like the
maggots appear from nowhere, but it's just that you didn't
notice the fly or its eggs. The fly lays hundreds of eggs at a
time. They will begin to hatch within a day. It present in
rotten foods because they like meat: leftovers, discards, pet
food, dead animals, any old meat will do. They eat to fuel
their growth until they pupate.

Filth-breeding and small fly larvae, better known as

maggots, develop in all sorts of disgusting, decaying, organic
matter and waste. Each species has breeding material preferences
and environmental thresholds that must be met, but in general,
think of any place with moisture that’s rarely, or never,
cleaned as potential locations allowing maggots to feed and
grow.
And this physical observation will let us know which among
these three jars (Jar A, Jar B, Jar C) with meats will prove
that maggots are only present if flies have the chance to
propagate.

Methodology
The observers conduct three jars (Jar A that doesn’t have a
lid, Jar B that is covered with gauze pad and Jar C that is
totally concealed by its cap) with meat inside were observed
within five days.

Results
Among the three jars, Jar A which doesn’t have a cover has
the most number of maggots present inside the jar while Jar B
which was covered with gauze pad has the second abundant number
of maggots. Jar C which was totally covered with a lid doesn’t
have maggots.

Discussion
Based on our physical observation, maggots are present when
flies has the chance to propagate. If something hinders between
the rotten meat and the fly, like the lid that covers the jar
totally, it is impossible that we can see a maggot present in
the jar.

According to Redi’s experiment, the flies laid eggs on the

meat in the open jar which caused the maggots. Because the flies
could not lay eggs on the meat in the covered jar, no maggots
were produced. Redi therefore proved that decaying meat did not
produce maggots.

However, Jar B which was covered with gauze pad yet maggots
were present because there are small openings that enables the
fly to produce it.

Redi also note that maggots were found on the exterior

surface of the cloth that covered the jar. He successfully
demonstrated that the maggots came from fly eggs and thereby
helped to disprove spontaneous generation.

Conclusion
We, the observers, therefore conclude that Maggots are
present due to the existence of flies and rotten meat.
