2018 - 2019 LAB 3 Well Correlation

This document provides instructions for a lab exercise to correlate multiple well logs using sequence stratigraphy methods. Students are directed to color code lithologies, identify flooding surfaces to correlate parasequences between wells, correlate shales and sands, identify sequence boundaries and stacking patterns, and explain their interpretations.

LAB 3: Well Correlation using sequence

stratigraphy method

Methods:
•color in major lithologies: massive sand as yellow, shale as green (or no color), blue is carbonate,
black is coal, orange is sandstone/siltstone
•correlate using dashed blue marker as rough starting datum
•for each parasequence identify the flooding surfaces (FS). Use the major FS to correlate all the well
logs provided
•Make a cross section first correlating the shales for all wells
•then correlate the sands
• for main massive sands-pick the base of the massive sands as a sequence boundary ( SB) -
correlate this from well to well if possible- remember there will be zones without evidence of erosion
•Correlate the minor sands/siltstone units and coal
•identify regressive and transgressive stacking in parasequences and parasequence sets
•Identify areas of best expected reservoir
•Explain your interpretations
