Tutorial 4: NVH: Modal Correlation (MAC)

This document provides a tutorial on using μETA software to perform modal correlation (MAC) analysis between finite element (FE) and test models of a vehicle. It describes loading the FE and test model geometries and results files, exploding the models for clear viewing, defining the node pairs to compare between models, and calculating the modal assurance criterion (MAC) to determine correlation. The overall purpose is to correlate the vibration modes between the FE and test models of the vehicle.

μETA NVH Analysis – Modal Correlation (MAC)

1. Introduction

MAC tool is used for correlation between a FE and a Test model or between FE and FE models as well as
Test and Test models. Not all capabilities are demonstrated in this tutorial. The user may also refer to ETA
User’s Guide for the functionality of ETA and detailed description of functions and procedures.

1.1. Prerequisites

It is recommended for users who have never used ETA before to read the Introduction Tutorial. For old
ETA users it would be helpful referring to ETA Release Notes.

1.2. Problem Description

The purpose of this tutorial is to

correlate the modes between a FE
and a Test model.

1.3. Data Files

The files required for this tutorial are

/tutorials/mETA_tutorials/04-NVH/NVH_CAR_FE.nas
/tutorials/mETA_tutorials/04-NVH/NVH_CAR_FE.op2
/tutorials/mETA_tutorials/04-NVH/NVH_CAR_PLOTEL.nas
/tutorials/mETA_tutorials/04-NVH/NVH_CAR_PLOTEL.unv

2. Post Processing Procedure

2.1. Read Models’ Geometry

1. Switch to the Geometry tab of the Read

Results tab and press the … button to open
File Manager.

Select the FE Model geometry:

../04-NVH/NVH_CAR_FE.nas

1 and press Open.

2. The FE model is read and it should appear

2 as it is shown in the image on the left.
3 Repeat Step 1 for the second model.

Select the Test Model geometry:

../04-NVH/NVH_CAR_PLOTEL.nas

and press Open.

3. The META-post Question window appears.

Select the option Loading as a new model in
active window and press OK.

TIP: In ETA, it is possible to load one or

3 more models, in the same window or in
separate windows. It is also possible to
make a link of an already loaded model, in
many windows, without loading geometry
again, saving a lot of memory this way.

4. The Test model is positioned over the FE

and it should appear as it is shown in the
image on the left.

Models should now be exploded so that

each one can be seen clearly.

2.2. Explode Models

1. Open the Models List by pressing the

Select Active Models button.

2. Right-click on Model 1 and select

Explode > Edit.

3. Drag Model 1 in the –Y direction

holding the Left mouse button pressed.
1 Release the Left mouse button as soon
as the model is in the desirable
2 position and press Middle mouse
button or Esc to exit function.
2
TIP: Another way of exploding models
is by using the Explode tool of ETA
(available from Tools > Explode),
where it is possible to use many
different options, such as a specific
offset or a transformation matrix.

2.3. Define Results and Node Pairs

1. Open the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC)

tool from Calculate > Modal Correlation
(MAC).

Load the results for both models by invoking

the File Manager.
1 2
The first step is to load the modes from the
*.op2 results file for the FE Model.

Open the

../04-NVH/NVH_CAR_FE.op2

file as the Modal Results File.

Modes are now listed inside the Mode-

Frequency Table for Model 1.

2. The second step is to load the modes from

the *.unv results file for the Test Model.

Switch File type to Universal files (*.unv) and

select the

../04-NVH /NVH_CAR_PLOTEL.unv

file as the Modal Results File.

3. Modes are now listed inside the Mode-

3 Frequency Table for Model 2.

TIP: It is possible to exclude/include modes

from the list (e.g. the rigid body modes), using
TIP the Exclude, Include buttons accordingly.

4. Open the Models List by pressing the Select

Active Models button and activate ALL
models by clicking with the Left mouse button
the corresponding checkbox.

TIP: Double clicking with the Left mouse

button on a model’s checkbox, activates only
that model. It is equivalent to the Activate
Only option from the context menu of the
model.

μETA NVH Analysis – Modal Correlation (MAC)

1. Add the PlotEl Nodes of Model 2 by pressing

the Add button and then selecting the PlotEl
1 Nodes option.

2. Nodes are listed in the Node Pairs tab.

TIP: Node Pairs table can be saved on a *.npt

file, using the Save Button. This way, it is
possible to correlate 2 models without having
2 to load their geometry. This table can be read
inside the tool and Modal Correlation is then
calculated for these pairs and for the provided
normal mode results without the need to load
the geometry.

It is possible, to modify the settings of the

TIP MAC tool, from the Settings tab.

2.4. Calculate Modal Correlation (MAC)

1. Mode Pairs are calculated as

soon as Mode Pairs tab is
selected.

Click on Mode Pairs tab and

wait for the calculation to finish.
1

2. Finally press the MAC button and select

the MAC Plot option in order to create the
MAC plot.

Two new 2d plot windows are created. The

3dMAC and the Freq_Diff.
3 3. Click on the 3dMAC window to view the
MAC plot.

4. Similarly, click on the Fre_Diff window to

view the Frequency Difference between
Modes.

1. Before proceeding to the next paragraph,

switch back to the MetaPost window.

2. Also, Set the Deformation Scale Factor to

Auto calculate from the Read Results >
Results > Deformation tab.

2.5. Animate Modes

1. Select one mode pair from the

Mode Pairs list and press Anim.

2. Activate Fringe.

Set the Fringe Options as shown

in the image on the left.

TIP: Fringe Options are available

2 either from the pull-down menu of
the Fringe button or from the
context menu of the Fringebar via
the Fringe Style menu.

3. Animation should look as shown

in the image on the left.

Press the Stop button to stop the

3 animation.

TIP: It is possible to hide entities

e.g. CELAS, RBEs, etc from the
Set Visible Entities card (F12).

For better appearance, hide

solids and turn off wire also.
