The 1996-97 school year began with a celebration.

Brother Rice joined other Christian Brothers' schools in celebrating Edmund Rice's beatification, the final step before sainthood. Faculty and students travelled to Rome to represent the school at the official ceremony. The school also had its own special mass to honor its namesake.

The school continues to grow and modernize.

The enrollment grew to over fourteen hundred students, and new faculty members joined the staff. A new physics lab was opened through the generous donation of Mr. John Wakerly, class of 1966. New technology was also added to the library, computer labs, and some of the classrooms to help the learning process.

Rice Pride soared both on and off the field and in the classrooms. The Maroon and Orange Club was established to help cheer for Rice's sports teams. The Edmund Rice Society, in its second

year, continued to celebrate the life of Edmund Rice. The A.P.E.X. Program's "mock debate" helped demonstrate the brillance of both the teachers and the students.

Faculty and students also donated their time and money to help others in need. The juniors and seniors each performed at least twenty hours of Christian Service. Every Tuesday and Thursday several volunteers journeyed to St. Gelasius to help grammar school students and the homeless. The school has daily mission collections in all of the religion classes, as well as other ministering functions such as the Mothers' Club's annual Oak Forest Christmas Mass.

For forty-one years Brother Rice High School has demonstrated many aspects that set it apart from any other school. Through its quality education, sports programs, clubs, and Christian Service, Brother Rice has taught leadership, scholarship, sportsmanship, and above all, Christian Values. The aforementioned are only a few of the many components to the reason why Brother Rice has broken and will continue to break on through the mold of any ordinary high school.

Opening ~

On 6 October 1996, Brother Edmund Ignatius Rice was declared Blessed by Pope John Paul II in Rome. A delegation of approximately twenty students, teachers, brothers, and alumni from Brother Rice attended the Beatification Mass in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City. The three hour mass was said by His Holiness, Pope John Paul II. The mass was said in various languages such as Latin, Polish, Ukranian, Spanish, Italian, and English. Over 50,000 people from all over the globe united in St. Peter's Square in order to see the sixteen people beatified, among them, Brother Edmund Ignatius Rice.

Before the Mass began, a tapestry of Brother Rice was unfurled, which led to cheers from the Brother Rice following. During the Pope's homily, he spoke about

the life and teachings of this great man. The Beatification Mass was only one of many events in Rome surrounding the Beatification of Edmund Rice.

The following day, Monday, 7 October, the First Mass of Blessed Edmund Rice was said inside St. Peter's Basilica. The celebrant for the mass was the Cardinal Primate of Ireland. The two-hour long mass was restricted to the followers of Brother Rice. The Cardinal also spoke about Edmund Rice and about maintaining peace in Edmund's homeland, Ireland. Besides attending events surrounding the Beatification, the contingent also toured the city of Rome, as well as journeying to the cities of Assisi and Florence, and participated in a number of other activities.

had by all who had the opportunity to witness these truly remarkable experiences of Blessed Edmund Rice and the beautiful country of Italy.

Christmas vacation is a time to relax and enjoy the time away from homework and tests. During the break, many students settle down and prepare themselves for the second semester. Thi year, however, a handful of students chose to do something different, something that they would remember for the re t of their live. Senior Michael Battaglia, Matthew Roman, Jonah Schneider,' and Chris Zack spent ten days in Scotland and England ightseeing uch beautiful places a Big Ben, The Tower of London, and many historic castles and abbeys. Meanwhile, Senior Patrick Day spent his break in Spain. Pat saw many beautiful places, including the Museo del Prado, which features rich artwork by many world famous

artists. Senior Dan Lazarz and Junior Kevin Carter were fortunate enough to make a pilgrimage to Rome to witness the Beatification of the now Blessed Edmund Rice. They travelled through much of Italy's scenic countryside and stopped in many different towns including Assi i and Florence.

Each student also had the chance to experience life and a different culture in another country. They were able to experience other societies at work and see how unique they as Americans are. These students all agreed that the trips were definitely something that they will never forget.

Student Life

Homecoming Spirit Week is a time of great pride and joy for the school. All students are welcome to join in the festivities by dressing down and cheering for their teams. By purchasing a button for a few dollars, tudents and teachers can dress down in various types of clothing, such a seven tie paraphanalia, or college shirts of their choice.

The all school pep rally, held Friday, 27 September 1996, brought the week to an exciting and emotional end when the football captains gave motivational talks to pump up the tudent body for the homecoming game.

When the captains finished speaking, Coach Ryan took the mi rophone and enthu iasticalIy spoke to the student body. Coach Gleeson then reassured the crowd that their team would be champs. The captains and the coaches then had it out in a tug of war. The player won, no problem.

After beating Notre Dame on Saturday, 28 September 1996, the school packed the south gym for the dance. A record of over 350 couples attended. The night's theme was "If I Could Change the World" by Eric Clapton. When homecoming week ended at 11 :00 pm., the majority of the couples left to enjoy dinner with friends.

What's a good way to celebrate victory? Hmm ... Dance! On 28 September 1996, the Brother Rice student body celebrated the Varsity Football team's victory over Notre Dame earlier in the day.

As the students walked toward the north gym doors they were greeted by Br. Hayes, Mr. Albanese, and Mr. Augustyn. After presenting their tickets, the students checked their coats and danced the night away. This marked the beginning of an enchanted evening.

For weeks, the dance committee had been hard at work planning, reserving a OJ, picking out songs, decorations, and a theme. With the help of the Fathers' Club, the dance was flawless.

The couples danced to great mu~ sic, took pictures, enjoyed refreshments, and had fun. After the dance students capped the night off with a pleasant meal or party. The 1996 Homecoming Dance was a huge success, with well over three hundred couples in attendance. For one night the Crusaders had the opportunity to both "Change the World" and "Break On Through."

THE HOMECOMING GAME '9E

On 28 September 1996, a sunny saturday afternoon at 1:00p.m. the Brother Rice Varsity football team kicked off the homecoming game against the "Dons" of Notre Dame High School. The Crusaders shut out the Dons to win their homecoming 14-0. Br. Rice broke away early in the contest on a 1 yard run from Deandre Hayes. The final score came from a six yard pass from Scott Kranz to Brian Barton. Both of Buddy Gallagher's extra points were

good. The Crusaders finished the game with 266 total offensive yards.

On the other side of the ball the Crusader _ defense allowed Notre Dame only 127 total offensive yards. The Dons were held to only 89 rushing yards and a mere 38 aerial yards. All the coaches agreed the great defensive effort helped carry the Crusaders to victory.

Founder's Day Hall of Fame

On January 21, 1997, the Brother Rice Community gathered once again in celebration of Founder's Day. Founder's Day is the day in which the school pays tribute to Edmund Rice and all those who have helped sculpt Brother Rice High School into what it is today.

The assembly began with Jesus Quiroga and Brandon Bradley delivering speeches on the Hispanic and African-American lifestyles and how community applies to them. Jesus spoke of how the Latino way of life is unique in its own way and how it has contributed to Brother Rice. To the same effect, Brandon Bradley spoke about the African-American way of life and one of the greatest African-American leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At the con-

elusion of both speeches, Mr. "Doc" Mathius stepped up to the podium. He spoke about the role Edmund Rice plays in his life and keyed on three specific aspects of Edmund Rice's life: honor, courage, and commitment. After speaking abou t what it takes to possess these traits, Doc challenged each student to exercise his own personal honor, courage, and commitment. After Doc concluded his speech, Mr. Antos introduced the next section. Br. Casey gave an introduction to the newest member of the Brother Rice Hall of Fame before announcing the recipient of the honor, Br. Charles Gattone. Br. Br. Gattone were past members of the Hall of Fame, as well as Br. Gattone's family.

However, in addition to the speakers, faculty, and students in attendance, two other important figures were present in the audience: Br. Mooney, the current Provincial of the Western American Province and Mr. John Wakerly, the main benefactor towards the creation of the Petkus-Crane Physics Center, dedicated earlier this year. These two men have played integral roles in the success of Brother Rice High School, as did the Latino and African-American ways oflife. As Doc stated in his speech, Edmund Rice was present at this assembly making this Founder's Day truly special.

High School? Some people would say that Brother Rice is an institution for the advancement of education, spirituality, athletics, and life skills. However, after all is said and done, Brother Rice High School is just a name without the students and faculty. Brother Rice is a diverse community, made up of students and faculty who come from different cultures, neighborhoods, and backgrounds. The students and faculty of Brother Rice may live just a few blocks down the street or over thirty miles away.

Some of the faculty have been at Brother Rice for thirty or forty years, laying the foundation for the school and seeing it grow and expand into the great institution it is today. Others have been here for just a few years or are beginning their teaching careers right now. However, each faculty member shares something unique about himself or herself which adds to the diversity of Brother Rice.

Just like the faculty, each student adds a different aspect to Brother Rice High School. A student may be more involved in athletics, academics, or activities, but each of these different types of students plays an integral role in the growth and development of Brother Rice High School.

Although the students and facuIty of Brother Rice are different in many ways, they all share a

common bond: RICE P RIDE. RICE PRIDE is apparent everywhere at Brother Rice: sporting events, publications, theater, the activity meetings at 7:00 in the morning, the hallways, and even out on the weekends. However, the most important place Rice Pride exists is

within ourselves.

In Our Memories

Last summer we lost a very dear friend and classmate, Patrick Lyons. As a grade school student at St. Bernadette, Pat looked forward to the day he would become a Crusader like his older brothers Tim, Brian, and Brendan. While at St. Bernadette, Pat was already proudly demonstrating his Rice Pride as the ball boy for the Crusader varsity basketball team, rooting for his older brothers, rejoicing in every victory and agonizing over every loss. There was no finer example of Rice Pride.

When Pat entered Brother Rice as a freshman, he quickly made new friends. While his pride in Brother Rice grew,

his enthusiasm and optimism became contagious, and Brother Rice became equally as proud of him. Patrick excelled in the classroom as an honors student, and his kindness and generosity were rare. He was a great friend to so many of his classmates. Though his time with us was far too short, his impact was tremendous. He touched the lives of so many. Patrick will be missed but never forgotten. In our time of grief, we can find strength in the knowledge that Patrick is in a much better place, still rooting like crazy for the Crusaders. Our prayers remain with the Lyons family.

Sophomores

The Class of 1999 made a big step this '96-'97 school year at Brother Rice from new freshmen to seasoned sophomores. In their second year of high school, this class gained much valuable information in class as well as in life, learning from the examples of Br. Edmund Ignatius Rice and Joseph Cardinal Bernardin.

and feeling much more comfortable. It was a different feeling than last year, coming to school and talking to friends, while as freshmen we came as strangers from different grammar schools.

But what about all this "Break on Through" stuff and what does the class of 1999 have to do with it? Will Jim Morrison suddenly come back to earth and lead us through the doors to our future? Then President Bill Clin-

ton will stand on the other side of those doors exclaiming, "We can do it, We can build a bridge to the twentyfirst centuryl" going on and on and on about the coming of the new millennium.

That's itl This class is breakinll" on through to bigger and better things, most importantfy being the last class of this decade, century, millennium.

one small step for man, but one giant step for a teenager. In that way we broke through to another side of life, adulthood. We learned that kicking cameramen and spitting in umpires' faces, acts of "sophomoric" behavior, have serious consequences and set a person back on the road to adulthood. For now, we're almost halfway through high school, and the next two years may just be the fastest years of our lives. So, let's learn what there is to learn, do what we can do, and break on through.

Junior year is probably the toughest of all the years in high school. Not only must the juniors concentrate hard on their studies, they must learn to grow outside the classroom as well.

juniors have the opportunity to show that they have grown by participating in Christian Services for their rehgion class, having the opporto attend Kairos, listening to speakers on topics such as racism and and by giving serious conabout life after high

year. However, this is the year where all the countless hours of studying pay off. This is the year where the junior class shapes itself into the future leaders of the school.

It is hard to imagine that so much can be expected from students. It is hard to imagine that so much can be gained from one year. But after a year of hard work, comes probably one of the best years in your life. Even though junior year is probably the hardest, the year is filled with good times. With only one year left to go, only better times await.

give the students of Brother Rice the power to succeed in the real world. Even though all the tasks facing the students are not always easy, students have the opportunity to take advantage of the many facilities to improve their grades. .

During their four years at Brother Rice, students are introduced to a wide variety of classes and teachers. These teachers give the students the opportunity to learn about the worlds of Art, Business, Computers, English, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Physical Education, Religion, Science, and Social Studies. Through the teaching skills of the teachers and the cooperation and patience of the students, they will gain the knowledge to succeed.

Since all students do not have the same goals in life, Brother Rice offers a great variety of electives. Through the electives that are offered, students have the opportunity to learn about something that truly interests them. These classes are important because students might discover a particular topic that truly fascinates them.

Just like everything else in life, the Brother Rice experience challenges the minds of all students. Along the way, all students will face many tough homework assignments, labs, tests, and quizzes. Occasions like these call for the students to take time out of their schedule and apply themselves. When the students apply themselves to their studies, they acquire the know ledge that is essential to achieving their goals.

Faith is a key element in the Brother Rice Community. Educating the students with a Catholic curriculum, religion teachers play an important role in helping the students who are chosen for the Peer Ministry program, in which the seniors learn how to be a Christian role model.

The Religion Department hosts many different interactive events. Senior participate in Mass, reading and acting as Eucharistic Ministers. Juniors and Seniors can volunteer to go to St. Gelasius to earn their mandatory Christian service hours. Freshmen and Sophomore retreats are led by the Senior Peer Ministers. Juniors and Seniors have the option of attending Kairos, a four day retreat.

The value learned through religion classes and events help the students understand their faith and become members of the Christian Community.

breaking new ground

The English Department is certainly breaking through in Brother Rice education. During the 1996-97 school year, two new classes were added to the English curriculum. Journalism, taught by Mrs. Hall, produces the "Standard," the school newspaper, and the "Crusader," the school yearbook. Speech and Drama, taught by Mrs. McGeary, focuses on public speaking and drama, and assists students who are interesting in acting. ln addition to these two new classes, the English Department also ponsor "The Soapbox Messiah," the literary magazine. It i published once a year.

The English Department also has a strong passion for improving the writing skills of all students attending Brother Rice. Students in each English class must type at least four papers in the writing lab throughout the year. The program in the Lab analyzis students' papers for structural and grammatical problems.

This English Department certainly has broken through the normal mold on many levels, making it one of the stronge t programs in Chicago.

Foreign Languages breaking through cultures

For at least two years at Brother Rice High School, a student will break out of the normal Engli h speaking classes into a world of different cultures and different languages. The Foreign Language Department at Brother Rice offers students a vast opportunity to become proficient in another language. Throughout the Foreign Language corridor, students may hear and see the different languages either spoken by teachers and students or seen on the many posters that adorn the hallway.

At Brother Rice, student are required to take at least two years of a foreign language. The languages offered include Spanish, German, French and Latin. In addition to getting a feel for the different cultures in the classroom, the International Club also provides students with experiences of other cultures. In addition, the Spanish classes set up a memorial for the "Dia de Los Muertos," or "The Day of the Dead."

All in all, foreign languages playa major role in the life of a Brother Rice student by making him more aware of the different cultures and languages throughout the world.

SOCIAL STUDIES

breaking through history

The Social Studies Department exemplifies the most distinct variety of course studies at Brother Rice. Students explore a wide spectrum ranging from World History to U.S. History to the History of Chicago. American Government acquaints student with the structure and function of the governing system at the Federal, State, County, Municipal, and Local levels, while Constitutional Law concentrates on the American legal system with emphasis on criminal rights and procedures. Psychology and Sociology offer students an overview of individual and group behavior in the areas of natural and social science.

After completing the requirements of World History during freshman year and U.S. History in junior year, students continue their social studies with electives in senior year. The History of Chicago offers students a unique insight into the development of a great metropolitan city. The course covers the political, ocial, and economic background from its beginning to the present. World War ll/Present

covers U.S. History during its participation in the war, post-war period, and through the Carter and Reagan administrations. Under the direction of the venerable Mr. Baader, the Social Studies Department offers students a uniqu opportunity to study the various aspects of their past.

Brother Rice High School offers its students the opportunity to break on through in mathematics. With a wide variety of courses and technology, ranging from Pre-Algebra to Advanced Placement Calculus, the Mathematics Department has the means to teach all students.

With this advanced technology, the math department encourages its faculty members to attend workshops and to take classes to keep up with the curriculum. Many teachers attend summer mathematics sessions at Hamburger University to keep up with the new technology and then they are able to pass on this knowledge to their students the following year.

In addition, placement tests are given to incoming freshmen that will offer them the choice to move out of an Algebra I class and directly into a sophomore Geometry class. This allows those students the opportunity to take part in advanced placement courses during their junior and senior years.

The Brother Rice Mathematics Department, chaired by Mr. Augustyn, continues to educate students using the highest standards and by maintaining the best and most recent technology available. With this sophisticated curriculum and technology, students have every opportunity to break through all levels of mathematics.

Science is one of the most popular subjects at Brother Rice High School. Brother Hayes continues to serve as chairman of the Science Department. Students are required to take two years of science, but because of the vast array of challenging and unique classes, most take three or four. The science teachers meet monthly to discuss improvements, theories, and curricula.

The Science Department has taken many steps to stay in close contact with the ever changing world. For instance, this year the brand new Petkus-Crane Physics Center opened its doors for the first time. The Physics Center contains a computer at every station, helping students use modern technology in this fascinating subject. This class is now more oriented to student interaction and experimentation. The Biology Lab moved upstairs to room 211, where, the old Physics Lab was located. This lab also updated its material in the 1996-97 school year. With the Biology Labs right next to each other, the biology teachers now have easy access to each other's wide-ranging knowledge and facilities. The Science Department hopes to rebuild the biology, chemistry, and earth science labs, and add a new class in the next few years to keep pace with the technological superiority of the Physics Center.

Breaking the Mold

Art exposes a student to his creative and artistic side, through nature, still life, and an appreciation of fine art. Students experience all areas of art, including painting, sculpting, printmaking, drawing, and ceramics. The large glass showcase opposite the cafeteria provides a forum for students to display their arts. There is also a large display case in the main foyer where art is displayed. The art is enjoyed by all who pass these structures.

The purpose of the drawing course is to provide students with an understanding of the features associated with the operation of a computeraided design and drafting system (CAD). Emphasis is placed on the operation of the CAD software, since this is typically the most challenging, especially for new learners. The course is designed for any student with an interest in learning the use of an automated design and drafting tool.
