Ex.1 Write a formula for the sequence.

a) -5, -12, -19, -26...

b) What is the 9th term.

Ex.2 Write a formula for the sequence.

a) 4, 7, 10, 13, 16...

Ex.1 Write an explicit formula for the

sequence.

a) 1, 2, 4, 8, 16...

b) what is the 8th term?

Ex.2 10, -2, 2/5, -2/25...

b) what is the 7th term?
Compound Interest
• Compound interest formula- is the interest
paid on the initial investment, called the
principal, and on previously earned
interest.

• Continuous compound interest- when

interest is compounded continually.

• Yearly = annually = 1
• Semi annually = 2
• Quarterly = 4
• Monthly = 12
• Weekly = 52
• Daily = 365

Ex.1 You deposit $1,000 in an account that

pays 8% annual interest. Find the balance
after 5 years if the interest is compounded
with the given frequency.
A. Annually

B. Quarterly

C. Daily

D. Which would you choose?

Ex.2. Each year the local country club

sponsors a tennis tournament. Play starts
with 128 participants. During each round,
half of the players are eliminated. How many
players remain after 5 rounds?
Graphing Exponentials
• Exponential equations are in the form

• If b > 0 and b < 1, it is decreasing

• If b > 1 then it is increasing
• Asymptote- is a line that approaches a given
curve closely.
• Exponentials have an asymptote, the
asymptote will be the vertical shift(k).

• The y intercept can be found where x is

zero.
• (h) horizontal shift
• (a) vertical stretches or compressions

Characteristics of Exponential Graphs
• Domain: all possible x values
• Range: all possible y values
• X-intercept: where the graph crosses the x
axis
• Y-intercept: where the graph crosses the y
axis
• Interval of increase- domain of increase
• Interval of decrease- domain of decrease
• End behaviors: describes the course of the
graph to the far left and far right
Comparing Linear and
Exponential Functions
• Rate of Change- the measure of slope of a
line, rise over run.
