Marine Airbags
Length
Select the airbag’s effective length not less than the maximum width of vessel. But when you arrange two rows of airbags keep in
mind to calculate the total length of two rows to avoid contact of airbags. The total length of airbags can be estimated to be
effective length plus diameter.
Diameter
Diameter of airbag is decided by the height of your vessel’s support blocks. If the support is m high, then you should choose
airbag’s diameter not less than 1.5m. If you get 1.5m high blocks, the airbag with 2m diameters will suits you well.
Piles
Marine airbag’s performance is decided by its component plies. Generally speaking, airbags with 6 plies are enough for most
engineering works. Only in some rigorous situation, airbags will need 7-10 plies to enhance its performance.
We should confirm the follow information for the general launch calculation.
1. Type of vessel?
3. Width of vessel?
6. The condition of slipway ( slope, tide shedule, water depth, ground and so on)?

Criteria of Storage
All the marine airbags are delivery after coating French Chalk for the better protection of marine airbag.
1. Airbags should be kept in a dry place with room temperature and avoid the direct sunshine.
2. Avoid to contact with acid/alkaline chemical and oily petroleum base chemical for long period.
4. After use, airbags should be cleaned firstly and dried in the sun, then be coated with French Chalk to store.
1.Strictly control the inner pressure of airbags not exceed the safety working pressure.
2.The contacted surface of carried load with which should not have protrudent sharp subjects which may pierce airbags.
4.If the airbags are not used for long time or repaired they should be tested by the inflation experiment before used again. The
test inner pressure should be the same of working inner pressure. Generally the largely repaired airbags should low down the
working pressure for use.
This process can be used for the launching operation of cargo vessel, chemical vessel, AHTS, floating dock, and so on, most of
vessels under 18,000 tons(lightweight).
Preparation
1.According to the calculation, prepare enough airbags, towing winches, air compressor and other insturments needed.
2.Before operation, airbags should be inflated with 1.25 times pressure of working pressure to test its safety and airtightness. If
there is any problem, airbags should be fixed before use.
3.Clear all the obstacles and sharp iron nail from launch ramp. Check vessel bottom to unsure no welding scar which may
puncture airbags.
5.Close all vessel’s valves, fix the helm and screw propeller.
6.Insert airbags between support blocks and inflate them to lift vessel. When vessel is lifted, people can take out support blocks
under the ship.
(1)For the light weight ship, small amount of airbags can fully lift the ship at one time then it is easy to remove the blocks and
insert left airbags for launch.
(2)For the heavy ship, it will be lifted by airbags step by step. First people need to find the best point for airbag lifting. The best
position means where airbags can get big contact area with vessel bottom and also far way from vessel’s gravity center. People
may refer to the right drawing to find lifting condition need to be satisfied.
(3)When the first batch airbags lift part of vessel away from support blocks people can take out some blocks in front of airbags.
Then insert more airbags to lift vessel, step by step the vessel can be lifted fully by airbags. At that time people can remove all
support blocks under vessel.
(4)The calculation of airbag lifting is very important. When people use airbag to lift bow first the blocks under stern will bear
increasing press. According to calculation if there is possible damage to launch ramp people may increase blocks quantity under
stern.
Under some conditions the vessel need to be shifted to near water before launching. But it is not necessary for all launch
projects.
7. Adjusted the inner pressure of airbags to low down the vessel. Generally the bottom vessel can be 0.5——0.8m above the
ground.
8. All the airbags should be centered the ship and upright to the launching direction.
9. Start the towing winch to release the ship slowly. When the first airbag rolls out of the tow, move it to the stern and place it at
the planned position.
10. Repeat the former process and move ship to the right position.
11. Clean the launching area. When the water depth is enough for launch people may cut off or release the ropes to launch the
ship. If the launching water area is limited, people may use towing winch to release ship slowly into the water.
This process follows the standard CB/T3837(Technological requirements of ship launching or upgrading relying on airbags)
shall constitute a part of it and be in full effect.
1.Fasten the ship with guy rope or cable attached firmly with the winch.
2.Select a reasonable position near the bottom of bow to insert one or more airbags which will act as the fulcrum for winch to
move the ship when inflated and lift the bow. If it is difficult to insert airbags at the bottom of bow, people may insert them
from one side to another side. From heavy ship the quantity of bow lifting airbags should be added until they can lift the bow.
For V shape bos ship the bow lifting airbags should be insert at the position where they can have bigger contact area with the
bottom of ship.
Also, people may place airbags at appropriate positions at low tide and pull the ship upon airbags at high tide, then inflate
airbags to lift the ship. Anyway people should make the ship landing plan according to his practical situation.
3.After the bow lifted, start the winch to pull ship towards lands and insert more airbags to the space between ship bottom and
land until the full ship is pull upon the slipway.
4.Charge airbags further to lift ship bottom higher, then insert the wooden stands and withdraw airbags
