ME 40400 Finite Element Analysis: College of Engineering and Science Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering

The document summarizes a lab report for an engineering class on finite element analysis. It describes assembling a V8 engine model to identify the parts and demonstrate how the engine works. The procedure explains fitting each part in order. The discussion notes some missing parts but emphasizes how building the model clearly showed the engine components and 4-stroke operating cycle. The conclusion states the objective of demonstrating the V8 engine's working was achieved.

Introduction

The objective of this lab is to assemble a V8 engine model, identify the parts and their

functions and demonstrate the working od the engine.

Procedure

The V8 engine parts were removed from the box. The parts were taken out and

separated, where same parts were categorized together. The piston was assembled and

connected to the crankshaft. The lower crankcase was attached to the sump pan, which was

then attached to the base. The piston-crankshaft model was fitted into the cylinder block, and

the block was attached to the crankcase. Valves were assembled and fitted to the lower

cylinder heads. Then, rocker arms were fitted to the rocker shafts, which were the fitted to the

upper cylinder heads. Gaskets were then fitted, and the lower cylinder heads were fitted to the

cylinder block. Cams were assembled onto the camshafts and the camshafts were fitted to the

lower cylinder heads. The upper and lower cylinder heads were attached. Rocker covers,

crankshaft and camshaft sprockets, timing belt, idler pulleys, timing belt cover and water

pump were fitted onto the model, in the specified order. Then, crankshaft pulley, fan pulley,

fan, belt. batteries, and flywheel were fitted. Piston number 4 was positioned to the top-dead-

center and the distributors were fitted. The ignition timing was adjusted by turning the

distributor until the bulb connected to wire number 4 ignites. The distributor was then secured

in that position. Spark plugs, electric motor, clutch cover, inlet manifold assembly, dipstick

and exhaust manifolds were fitted. The engine was started, and it ran for around 30 seconds.

Discussion

The main issue with this lab is that a lot of parts were missing. This may be due to

the previous labs not cleaning up properly. The components of an engine and how an engine

works was shown very clearly while building this model. The 4-stroke cycle of an engine was

seen in demonstration after building the engine and when it was running. The first stroke is

for the intake, where the inlet valve is open, and the exhaust valve is closed, and the cylinder

is filled with fuel/air mixture and the inlet valve closes when the piston reaches its lowest

point. The second stroke happens when the piston rises, and both the valves are closed. The

piston compresses the fuel/air mixture inside the cylinder. The third stroke happens when the

spark plug is ignited. The force of the explosion pushes the piston down and that turns the

crankshaft. Lastly, the fourth stroke happens when the exhaust valve is open, and the piston

moves up to allow burnt gas due to the explosion to escape from the cylinder.

Conclusion

This lab clearly demonstrated the working of a V-8 engine clearly. The parts and functions were

also learned while building the model. The objective was reached.
