ASSIGNMENT 1 SEPT 2014 CHEMICAL PROCESS PRINCIPLES (CLB 10904)

CHEMICAL PROCESS PRINCIPLES (CLB 10904)

ASSIGNMENT 1
(DATELINE: Friday, 3rd October 2014 before 5PM)

Question 1 (6 marks)
Using the table of conversion factors, convert
a. 1760 miles/hr to m/s.
b. 900 kg/m3 to American Engineering System units.
c. 5.37 x 103 kJ/min to hp.

Question 2 (12 marks)

The flow rate of a fluid through a nozzle can be determined through an equation as given below. Evaluate
whether the equation is dimensionally homogenous.
" ΔP % 2
q = C$A ' 4
$# ρ '& )d ,
1− ++ 1 ..
* d2 -
Where: q = Volume flowing per unit time
C = Constant with dimensions time per area
d1 = Smaller nozzle diameter
d2 = Larger nozzle diameter
A = Area of nozzle outlet
ΔP = Pressure drop across the nozzle
ρ = Density of fluid

Question 3 (22 marks)

A mixture with average molecular weight, M of 54.46 contains 25.0 wt% acetaldehyde (MW 44.05, SG
0.783), X wt% acetone (MW 58.08, SG 0.791) and Y wt% of acetic acid (MW 60.05, SG 1.049).

a. Determine X (wt% acetone) and Y (wt% acetic acid).

b. Calculate the mole fractions of each compound in the mixture.
c. Determine the total number moles of the mixture if it contains 25.0 lbm of acetic acid?

Note to students:
1. This is individual assignment.
2. Submission must be handwritten with complete solution.
