Q.J The reaction A - - B is to be carried out isothermally in a continuous flow reactor.
Calculate both the CSR and PFR reactor volumes necessary to consume 99% of A (i .e, CA=
0.0 I CAo) when the entering molar rate is 5 mol/h, assuming the reaction rate - rA is:
a) - rA= k with k= 0.05 mlo/h . dm 3
b) - rA = kCA with k= 0.0001 s·1
c) - rA= k CA 2 with k =3 dm 3/mol.h
The entering volumetric flow rate is 1Odm 3/h . (Note FA=CA u) for a constant volumetric flow rate
u = Uo, then FA = FA Uo. also, CAo=FAo/ u0 =0.5 mol/dm 3 .
Q.2 The gas phase reaction A - - B+ C, is carried out in a 20dm 3 constant batch reactor. 20
moles of pure A initially placed in the reactor. The reactor is well mixed.
a) lf the reaction is first order: - rA= kCA with k= 0.865 s· 1 , calculate the time necessary to
reduce the number of moles of A in the reactor to 0.2mol. (note NA=CA V)
b) If the reaction is second order: - r" = k CA 2 with k = 2dm 3/rnol.min, calculate the time
necessary to consume 19.0 mo! of A .
c) If the temperature is 127°C, what is the initial total pressure? What is the final total
pressure assuming the reaction goes to completion?
Q.3 The exothermic reaction A - - B+C was carried out adiabatically and the following data
recorded :
X 0 0.2 0.4 0.5 0.6 0.8 0.9
- rA mlo/dm 3. min 10 16.67 50 50 50 12.5 90 .09
The entering molar flow rate of A was 30011101/min .
a) What are the PFR and CSTR volumes necessary to achive40% conversion?
b) Over what range of conversions would the CSR and PR reactor volumes be identical?
c) What is the maximum conversion that can be achieved in a 10.5 dm 3 CSTR?
d) What conversion can be achieved if a 7.2 dm 3 PFR is followed in a series by a 2.4 dm 3
CSTR?
e) What conversion can be achieved if a 2.4drn 3 CSTR is followed in a series by a 7.2dm 3
PFR:
f) Plot the conversion and rate of reaction as a function of PFR reactor volume up to a volume
of 10dm 3?
