This is an image so firmly embedded in

before producer John Nathan-Turner began
his crusade to introduce distinctive, easily

costume designer James Acheson had already
cracked it. Almost by accident, they created
a totem of British popular culture – a woollen

that the Target books were
the principal way to relive
old episodes of Doctor Who
in the days before we had
easy access to recordings.
Well, yes, but they were also objects of joy
in themselves: beautifully packaged, bite-
sized novels that gave us the chance to
explore our favourite TV series in an
entirely different medium. At their
best, they conjured up vivid worlds
that couldn’t be staged on a TV
budget, presenting thoroughly
realised characters who leapt
off the page. Even the
less-celebrated Target
books – those that were
rumoured to have been
dashed off in the
space of a weekend
– offered clarity.
Flying in the face
of how many fans like
to collect their Doctor
Who, the range was
boldly inconsistent. Some
books were brilliant, some
disappointing. They often
contradicted each other. In
short, they were just like the
TV series they were based on.
Those who argue that there
is no need for novelisations in
an era of DVDs, Blu-rays and
streaming are missing the
point. These books were
the pinnacle of Doctor
Who merchandise.
So it’s brilliant that they’re
back. Since 2011, BBC Books
has been issuing reprints of
the old Targets. Every 20th-
century Doctor Who story
(with the exception of 1984’s
Resurrection of the Daleks
and 1985’s Revelation of the
Daleks) has been adapted.
Now, finally, they’ve taken
the plunge and published four
titles from the untapped wealth
