Performance Objective:

Performance Objective #11: Given a list of the rules of logs, students will match

examples of the rules of logs with the corresponding rule with no more than 1 mistakes.

Performance Objective #12: From memorization, students will condense a logarithmic

expression as much as possible in 2 out of 3 questions on a quiz.

Performance Objective #13: From memorization, students will expand a logarithmic

expression as much as possible in 2 out of 3 questions on a quiz.

Resources or Materials Needed:

Computer, projector, and Elmo

Meanings of Logs Worksheet (Math-Aids, 2017)

Rules of Logs Foldable (Davenport, 2017)

Expanding and compressing Logs Puzzle (Anonymous, 2016)

(See instructional material page for all activities)

Time: 75 minutes

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities:

Play the following video from YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzu2POfYv0Y

As a class discuss the connection between logs and exponents. Use the Meaning of Logs

worksheet to facility this discussion.

Step 2: Content Presentation:

Students will complete the Rules of Logs foldable with the instructor.

Go over evaluating logarithmic expressions:

 log15 ( 8 )
 log 1 ( 842 )
6

 log 1 ( 0.722 )
9

Go over the following examples of condensing logs:

 3 log( 𝑥 4 𝑦 3 ) + 2 log( 1
𝑥
) − 5 log( 𝑦 )

 ln( 8 ) + 2 ln( 𝑥 ) − 8 ln( 𝑦 )

 log( 𝑦 ) + log( 19 )

 log( 𝑧 ) − log( 20 )

Go over the following examples of expanding logs:

 log 8 ( 64𝑥 3 )

6𝑥9
 ln( 𝑦5
)

 log 5 ( 10𝑥 + 15𝑦 )

Step 3: Learner Participation:

Working in pairs students will complete the expanding and compressing puzzle.

Step 4: Assessment:

Students will take a mini-test over this material using an online software. (See assessment page)

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities:

Student completes Section 7.4 certification in Hawkes (computer homework software).

Lesson Plan Summary:
