In-Sem. Examination – I-
Improvement Test
Sub: Transportation Engineering-I Max. Marks: 30
Day and Date:
Time:
Instructions: i) All questions are compulsory.
ii) Write answer of the MCQ/ objective type question only on first page of answer book
iii) Draw neat labled diagrams whenever necessary.
iv) Use of only non programmable calculator is allowed.
v) Assume suitable data wherever necessary.
Multiple Choice Questions:

1. The stopping sight distance on a highway at ascending gradient of 5% for a design speed of
70kmph. Assuming coefficient of friction as 0.35 and reaction time as 2 sec.
a) 80 m
b) 87.14 m
c) 95 m
d) 100 m
2. The maximum speed on roads, depends on the
a) Sight Distance
b) Type of road surface
c) The type of the highway
d) All the above
3. Which one of the following is taken into consideration while determining overtaking sight
distance in four lane divided highway?
a) Distance covered during reaction time
b) Distance covered during overtaking operation
c) Distance covered during reaction time plus distance covered during overtaking operation plus
distance covered by opposing traffic.
d) All the above
4. Which of the following is not included in PIEV time of driver?
a) Perception time
b) Volition time
c) Interfering time
d) Emotion time
5. Bottom most layer of pavement is known as
a) Wearing course
b) Base course
c) Sub-base course
d) Subgrade
6. The shift of the transition curve of radius 300m and length of transition is 48m
a) 0.32 m c) 0.52 m
0.42 m d) 0.62 m

Solve any four questions each carry six marks.

1. Explain obligatory points. With sketches, discuss how these control the alignment.
2. Explain camber. What are the objects of camber? Specify the recommended ranges of camber for
different types of pavement surfaces.
3. The speeds of overtaking and overtaken vehicle are 80kmph and 60 kmph respectively. If the
acceleration of the overtaking vehicle is 2.5kmph per second, calculate the safe passing sight
distance for the following conditions: a) One-way traffic b) two-way traffic.
4. List the object of providing extra widening with neat sketch.
5. Calculate the length of transition curve using the following data: Design speed=80Kmph, Radius
of circular curve=250m, pavement width including extra widening=7.8m, allowable rate of
superelevation=1 in 150 (pavement rotated about the inner edge).
6. Two cars are approaching from opposite directions of a road with a gradient of two percent, with
velocities of 90 kmph and 75 kmph respectively. Calculate the minimum sight distance required
to avoid head on collision of both the cars. Reaction time of the driver is 2.5 sec and the
coefficient of friction is 0.35.
