ASSIGNMENT

CHAPTER 4

1. (i) Prepare the divided difference table using the data given in Table 1.

Table 1

x 1 2 3 4

f ( x) 1 1 0 -1

(ii) Transform the data from divided difference table obtained in Q1 (i) into
equation of S(x) using natural cubic spline polynomial.

2. Given the set of data in Table 2.

f (xi) 0 1 8 27 64

(i) Construct the graph based on the data given.

(ii) Generate the Newton Divided Difference Polynomial Table.
(iii) Adam claims that the above data can be used to estimate f(4.5).
Do you agree with him? Justify your answer.

a junction.

(i) Detect the velocity of the motorcycle at t=3 minutes and t=5 minutes using
three (3) point forward difference formula with h  2 minutes.

(ii) Recommend which difference formula able to estimate the acceleration of

the motorcycle at t  7 minutes. Taking h  2 minutes.

4. Given the distance in equation of s= f(t)  0.0658t2 + 1.2672t + 0.0563 where t is time.

(i) Convert the equation into the table form with interval of -1 ≤ t ≤ 1 with step
size of h = 0.5.
(ii) Given the velocity, v=ds/dt. Using the appropriate difference formulas given
in Formulae, analyse the velocity at t = 0.5 by using two point forward
difference, three point central difference and three point backward
difference
5. Figure 1 shows the data of velocity versus time.

(ii) Using the appropriate difference formulas given in Formulae, analyse the first
derivatives of f(x) at x = 1.5 with step size of h = 0.5 on two point backward
difference and three point forward difference. Approximate value of f(x) can be
obtained from the graph given. Determine the relative error (in percentage) for

As a civil engineer, you are appointed to design the cross-sectional area of the river in order
to predict the water flow rate during the rainy or monsoon season using 2-points and 3-
points Gauss Quadrature. Assume that the width of the river is 30 meter.
