2017 MBC NATIONAL CHORAL COMPETITION

Contest Mechanics

Eligibility

 The competition shall be in two divisions – Children’s Choirs and the Open Category
 A choir may represent a school, parish, district, company, agency, or interest group;
 Participants in the children’s choir category must have been born after November 30, 2001;
photocopies of birth certificates should be submitted together with the registration form
 A choir should have a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 30 members;
 A chorister can only participate in one choir;
 Choral conductors may only conduct one choir each in the children’s and open categories, that
qualify for the competition proper.
 No conductor below the age of 16 is allowed.

Competition format

Children’s Choir Division

 Live auditions will be conducted in designated cities on specific dates (please refer to the official
facebook page for the schedule or email [email protected]).
 Choirs should pre-register with the assigned radio station handling the elimination round in that
region;
 On the day of the audition, choirs should bring three clear copies each of the songs they will sing
(one liturgical/inspirational piece, one pop/contemporary work, and/or a regional/folk number),
to be submitted to the production staff in a folder, together with the detailed registration form,
one hour before the audition proper.
 Other choirs, particularly those from the regions, may opt to audition by sending a high-quality
video recording in which the choir sings 3 songs of the different genres mentioned above,
together with the registration form. The entire application packet should be sent to the head
office of Manila Broadcasting Company, Sotto Street, CCP Complex, Pasay City, and must be
received on or before October 16, 2017
 The contest proper will be conducted on December 5-9, 2017 at the Aliw Theater. 16 choirs will
compete in the semifinals, bracketed into groups of four per daily elimination round. One
winner will be declared on each evening of the semi-final round, with the four daily winners
facing off in the grand finals at the Aliw Theater on Saturday, December 9, 2017;
 Each choir is required to sing three songs within 12 minutes: the competition piece to be sung
a’capella; a novelty number; and one of three elective musical selections proposed by the choir
from which the judges will select.

choirs will compete. Choirs will be bracketed in groups of seven for the daily elimination
rounds, with two winners being declared each evening. Daily winners will compete in the grand
finals at the Aliw Theater on December 9, 2017. University of Baguio Voices Chorale, having
been elevated to the Hall of Fame after three consecutive championships, is not eligible to
compete this year.
 Each choir is required to sing three songs within 12 minutes: the competition piece to be sung
a’capella; a novelty number; and one of three elective musical selections proposed by the choir
from which the judges will select on the spot
.

Music Requirements
 Accompaniment, if any, is limited to one acoustic instrument – either piano, guitar, or other
instrument specified by the score.
 Use of any electronic instrument or recorded accompaniment is not allowed.
 The choirs in the competition proper in December should submit to MBC five copies each of the
sheet music for songs in their repertoire on or before November 24, 2017.
 Music scores may be collected from the production staff immediately after the respective semifinal
rounds, except for those who make it into the grand finals, whose sheets may be collected after the
show on December 9, or within one week after the grand finals. Uncollected scores will not be sent
by mail.
 Published choral works may only be sung using original scores or authorized copies. All scores
must be dropped off at MBC or sent via courier. Scores sent electronically as PDF or similar files
will not be accepted.

Other Requirements for Submission prior to the national competition

Final registration form, downloadable from the Facebook page of the MBC National Choral
Competition, or as requested via email;
Profile or write - up on the group;
High resolution photo of the group and its conductor.

 These must be received by MBC on or before November 24, 2017; incomplete requirements shall
be grounds for disqualification

Running Order

The running order for each semifinal round will be decided by drawing lots before each programme.
Running order for the grand finals will be chronological according to the day each choir wins the semis.
Jury

 The jury will be composed of people of recognised repute in the music and artistic world (including
education and music criticism).
 In order to avoid possible repetitions, the jury will choose the piece to be performed from the roster
of elective musical selections.
 The judges’ decisions will be final and irrevocable.

Criteria for Judging


 Musicality (Tonal Quality, Harmony, Diction) 70%
 Presentation (Dynamics and Technique, including costumes and choreography) 20%
 Audience Impact 10%

Penalties - Any choral group exceeding the time limit allotted for their performance will be penalized
as follows:
 Less than one (1) minute over time allotted – 1 point subtracted from total cumulative score of all
judges
 One (1) to two (2) minutes over time allotted – 2 points subtracted from total cumulative score of all
judges
 More than two (2) minutes over time allotted – 3 points subtracted from total cumulative score of all
judges

Prizes at Stake

Choirs from the provinces outside Mega-Manila who qualify for the competition proper in December
will each receive a travel subsidy to help cover the group’s fare. This will be given to them upon
booking their trip. Each of the choirs that compete in the semifinals are guaranteed P7,500 take home
prize, and shall be given plaques of participation on the night they compete. Daily winners on each
semifinal night will receive P15,000 each. For the Grand Finals, the winning choirs will receive
trophies plus cash prizes as follows:

Children’s Division

Fourth place P 15,000 and trophy


Third place 30,000 and trophy
Second Place 50,000 and trophy
Champion 100,000 and trophy

Open Category

Each of four runners-up P 10,000


Fourth place 20,000 and trophy
Third place 40,000 and trophy
Second place 75,000 and trophy
Champion 150,000 and trophy

Special awards for Best Show Choir (P10,000) and Best Original Arrangement for a Novelty Number
(P10,000) shall also be given during the grand finals.
