1. Before Use
∫ Splash Proof
Splash Proof is a term used to describe an extra level of protection this camera offers
against exposure to a minimal amount of moisture, water or dust. Splash Proof does not
guarantee that damage will not occur if this camera is subjected to direct contact with
water.
In order to minimize the possibility of damage please be sure the following precautions are
taken:
– The Splash Proof feature works in conjunction with the H-HS12035 and H-HS35100 lenses
that were specifically designed to support this feature.
– Make sure the built-in flash is closed.
– Make sure that all doors, socket caps and terminal covers are securely closed.
– Make sure that you are in a dry and secure place when changing the battery, lens or memory
card. After changing, make sure their protective doors are securely closed.
– If this camera is exposed to water, sand or any other foreign material clean it as soon as
possible, taking the necessary precautions that the foreign substance does not get inside the
camera.
– Under no circumstances should you touch or place any foreign objects within the camera or
in close proximity of the camera’s image sensor.
∫ Condensation
• Condensation may occur on the lens, monitor or in the viewfinder when the room temperature
or humidity changes rapidly. This may cause the image to temporarily become hazy. If this
occurs, turn the camera off and allow the camera to sit in a temperature stable environment for
several minutes. It will clear by itself.
• If you know that you will be moving between areas where there will be a large change in
temperature or humidity, you can help prevent condensation forming on the camera by placing
the camera in a large plastic zipper bag, so condensation will form on the bag, not the camera.
Allow the temperature to stabilize before removing the camera from the bag.

2. Getting Started/Basic Operations
It has been found that counterfeit battery packs which look very similar to the
genuine product are made available for purchase in some markets. Some of
these battery packs are not adequately protected with internal protection to meet
the requirements of appropriate safety standards. There is a possibility that
these battery packs may lead to fire or explosion. Please be advised that we are
not liable for any accident or failure occurring as a result of use of a counterfeit
battery pack. To ensure that safe products are used, we recommend that a
genuine Panasonic battery pack is used.
• Use the dedicated charger and battery.

2. Getting Started/Basic Operations
The number of recordable pictures varies depending on the recording interval time.
If the recording interval time becomes longer, the number of recordable pictures
decreases.
[For example, if you were to take one picture every two minutes, then the number of
pictures would be reduced to approximately one-quarter of the number of pictures
given above (based upon one picture taken every 30 seconds).]
30
2. Getting Started/Basic Operations
• The operating times and number of recordable pictures will differ according to the
environment and the operating conditions.
For example, in the following cases, the operating times shorten and the number of recordable
pictures is reduced.
– In low-temperature environments, such as on ski slopes.
– When flash is used repeatedly.
• When the operating time of the camera becomes extremely short even after properly charging
the battery, the life of the battery may have expired. Buy a new battery.

About RAW
RAW format refers to a data format of images that have not been processed. Playback
and editing of RAW images require the camera or the dedicated software.
You can make advanced adjustments by editing RAW images. For example, you can
adjust the White Balance after taking pictures or save them in file formats that are
capable of displaying them on a PC. Pictures taken in RAW format will have higher
image quality than those taken in JPEG format, but the data size will be larger.
• You can process RAW images in [RAW Processing] in the [Playback] menu. (P233)
• To process and edit RAW files on a PC, use the software “SILKYPIX Developer Studio” by

Applicable modes:
You can record slow motion or fast motion pictures by changing the frame rate. In [Variable
Frame Rate], you can set the frame rate for recording.
Slow motion pictures (overcrank recording)
Used in scenes such as climaxes, a slow motion effect creates a dramatic impression. Set
a frame rate that provides more frames than the recording frame rate in [Rec Quality]
does.
Example: If you set [FHD/100M/24p] to [48fps] and record a motion picture, a slow motion
effect of 1/2 can be gained.
Fast motion pictures (undercrank recording)
A fast motion effect is used in scenes showing the flow of clouds, people standing in the
middle of crowds, etc. Set a frame rate that provides less frames than the recording frame
rate in [Rec Quality] does.
Example: If you set [FHD/100M/24p] to [12fps] and record a motion picture, a quick motion
effect of 2k can be gained.

the battery.
To use the AC adaptor, a DC coupler (optional) is required.
353
13. Others
Filters (optional)
The MC protector is a transparent filter which affects neither the colors nor the amount of
light, so it can always be used to protect the camera’s lens.
The ND filter reduces the amount of light to approximately 1/8th (equal to adjusting the
aperture value 3 increments) without affecting the color balance.
PL filter will suppress the reflected light from a metal or non spherical surfaces (flat
non-metallic surfaces, water vapour or invisible particles in the air), making it possible to
take a picture with enhanced contrast.

• Depending on the recording conditions and the type of card, the number of recordable pictures
and available recording time vary.
• When the motion picture size is set to [FHD], [HD] or [VGA] in [MP4], you can continuously
record a motion picture up to 29 minutes 59 seconds or until the file size reaches 4 GB. You
can check the recordable time on the screen.
– Since the file size becomes larger with [FHD], recording with [FHD] will stop before
29 minutes 59 seconds.
• You can continuously record a motion picture with its size set to [4K] in [MP4] without a pause
even if the motion picture exceeds 4 GB. However, the recorded content has to be played back
as multiple files.
• Though a [MP4 (LPCM)]/[MOV] motion picture can be recorded continuously without a pause
even when its file size exceeds 4 GB, the recorded content is played back with multiple files.
• The maximum available continuous recording time is displayed on the screen.

Striping or flicker may appear under lighting such as fluorescent lighting and
LED lighting fixture.
395
13. Others
The brightness or the hue of the recorded picture is different from the actual
scene.
• When recording under fluorescent or LED lighting fixture, etc., increasing the shutter speed
may introduce slight changes to brightness and color. These are a result of the characteristics
of the light source and do not indicate a malfunction.
• When recording subjects in extremely bright locations or recording under fluorescent lighting,
LED lighting fixture, mercury lamp, sodium lighting, etc., the colors and screen brightness may
change or horizontal striping may appear on the screen.

396
13. Others
The screen may be blacked out momentarily, or the unit may record noise.
• Depending on the environment at the time of motion picture recording, the screen may be
blacked out momentarily or the unit may record noise due to static electricity or powerful
electromagnetic waves (radio towers, high voltage power lines, etc.).
397
13. Others
Since motion picture recording stops only after you press the motion picture button, the
sound of the operation may be noticeable. If the sound bothers you, try the following:
> Divide the last part of the motion picture using [Video Divide] (P242) in the [Playback]
menu.
The motion picture may not be divided near the very end of it. To avoid this, record
approximately 3 seconds longer.
> Set the camera to Creative Video Mode, and use a shutter remote control (optional) to
record motion pictures. (P353)

Monitor/Viewfinder
• If no operations are performed during the set time period, [Auto LVF/Monitor Off] (P59) is
activated, and the Monitor/Viewfinder turns off.
• When an object or your hand is positioned near the eye sensor, the Monitor display may switch
to the Viewfinder display. (P48)
It may flicker for an instant or the brightness of the screen may change
significantly for an instant.
• This occurs due to the aperture of the lens changing when the shutter button is pressed
halfway, or when the brightness of the subject changes. This is not a malfunction.
Black, white, red, blue and green dots appear on the Monitor/Viewfinder.
• This is not a malfunction.
These pixels do not affect the recorded pictures.
399
13. Others
The color tone of the viewfinder differs from the actual tone.
• Being a characteristic of the viewfinder of this unit, this phenomenon is not a problem.
Recorded images are not affected.

Playback.
• Is the clock in the camera set properly? (P36)
• Images edited on a PC or images recorded on other cameras might display a different date to
the recorded date during the Calendar Playback.
White round spots like soap bubbles appear on the recorded picture.
• If you take a picture with the flash in a dark place or indoors, white
round spots may appear on the picture caused by the flash reflecting of
particles of dust in the air. This is not a malfunction.
Motion pictures recorded with this model cannot be played back on other
equipment.
• The picture quality or sound quality of recorded motion pictures may be deteriorated even when
these are played back with the compatible devices. Also, recording information may not be
displayed correctly.

Battery
The battery is a rechargeable lithium ion battery. Its ability to generate power comes
from the chemical reaction that takes place inside it. This reaction is susceptible to
the surrounding temperature and humidity. If the temperature is too high or too low,
the operating time of the battery will become shorter.
If you drop the battery accidentally, check to see if the body of the battery and the
terminals are damaged.
• Inserting a damaged battery in the camera will damage the camera.
Do not allow battery terminals to come into contact with metal objects (such as
necklaces, hairpins, etc.).
• This can cause short-circuiting or heat generation and you may be badly burned if you touch a
battery.
Charger
• The [CHARGE] indicator may blink under the influence of static electricity or electromagnetic
wave. This phenomenon has no effects on charging.
• If you use the battery charger near a radio, the radio reception may be disturbed.
Keep the charger 1 m (3.3 feet) or more away from radio.
• The charger may generate whirring sounds when it is being used. This is not a malfunction.
• After use, be sure to disconnect the power supply device from the electrical outlet.
