1 System Overview
1 System Overview
1.1 General
The Tellabs 8600 managed edge system is a managed MPLS access solution aimed at deployment
of mobile transport networks, and Ethernet and IP VPN services as well as broadband service
aggregation for Internet services. The system is especially designed for the service provider
environment with carrier class functionality, simultaneously supporting both connection-oriented
(MPLS) and connectionless (IP) operations. The use of IP/MPLS technology with enhanced quality
of service features enables differentiated services in which the service quality can be predefined for
all traffic types and the availability of service can be protected with options built into the system. The
quality of service is guaranteed with DiffServ and DiffServ-aware MPLS traffic engineering already
in the access part of the network. The service speeds are flexible ranging from 1 kbps to 1 Gbps.
The connectivity services such as intranet, extranet, Internet access and voice communications are
implemented as Ethernet PWE3 (or other PWE3 types), or IP VPN according to [RFC4364].
The boundary between mobile and wireline services and networks is disappearing. From the cost
point of view it makes sense to use the same network for all services. The Tellabs 8600 platform has
a native support for services such as any-to-any IP VPN, Ethernet and ATM, all of which can be
end-to-end provisioned and managed. Additionally the same platform can take care of the Internet
traffic aggregation, which is one of the most rapidly growing businesses in terms of bandwidth.
For the mobile radio access networks (RAN) the Tellabs 8600 managed edge system offers a future
proof solution that caters the whole network technology evolution from TDM to ATM and eventually
to an ‘all IP’ RAN phase. As shown in the figure below the platform is positioned to cover the
whole transport network all the way from the cell sites to the edge of the mobile core. Throughout
all the evolution phases traffic grooming, service quality and transport can be managed and
optimized end-to-end across the same Tellabs 8600 network. Even though 3G is the primary driver
to implement the Tellabs 8600 system, the same platform – thanks to flexible MPLS technology
and Tellabs 8600 intelligent design – can be responsible for access aggregation for 2G and 2.5G
networks and services. The Tellabs 8600 platform offers an opportunity for a mobile operator to
broaden the service portfolio and increase revenue by offering advanced business or residential
services, such as managed WiFi access, IP VPNs, business critical Ethernet or Internet access.
Introducing services is extremely fast and cost-effective as all the service intelligence is in-built to
the system. The Tellabs 8600 system can be regarded as a real long term investment as it allows the
network convergence in the access, where the network investments are the most remarkable.
17
1 System Overview
The Tellabs 8600 system is able to cover the whole RAN network from the cell site to the mobile
core. The figure above illustrates the typical roles and locations of the elements in the network,
which are
Tellabs 8605 access switch and Tellabs 8607 access switch are compact pseudowire gateways
optimized for cell sites. They enable a cost-effective transport solutions where mobile data traffic
(e.g. HSDPA) is carried over xDSL as an option to E1/T1 lines. Tellabs 8607 access switch
provides modularity with various types of line modules, while Tellabs 8605 access switch has a
fixed interface configuration.
18
1 System Overview
The Tellabs 8600 managed edge system is composed of customer located devices, access network
devices and a network management system. All network elements are implemented with the same
architecture where traffic forwarding is fully hardware-based. Tellabs 8660 edge switch and Tellabs
8630 access switch are modular access aggregation and edge switch routers usually residing either
in the local exchange or transit exchange site of the network. The scalable, switchless architecture
allows various locations in the network. It is able to take care of tailored traffic treatment and
network reliability. When Tellabs 8660 edge switch or Tellabs 8630 access switch is used together
with Tellabs 8605 access switch/Tellabs 8607 access switch/Tellabs 8620 access switch, it provides
end-to-end managed services with guaranteed service availability, quality and security. Tellabs
8605 access switch, Tellabs 8607 access switch, and Tellabs 8620 access switch are optimized for
small local exchange sites.
Tellabs 8606 Ethernet aggregator enables a scalable solution for Ethernet access based services.
These network elements can be applied e.g. as access switches in MTU/MDU buildings or as
traffic aggregators in Ethernet access networks grooming VLAN based attachment circuits to
Tellabs 8660 edge switch.
The design of the Tellabs 8600 system is fully interoperable with other leading IP/MPLS products
allowing multi-vendor environment.
19
1 System Overview
1.4 Management
The Tellabs 8600 managed edge system can be managed by using Tellabs 8000 network manager
which is a network management system that provides the tools for network building, monitoring,
service creation, testing and control. Network complexity is simplified by a graphical user interface
which provides access to the functionalities from the same workstation. The command-line interface
(CLI) provides access to equal functionality to configure and monitor the Tellabs 8600 products
with ASCII textual commands using a router’s console or remote terminal (Telnet). The CLI gives
full control to all of the router’s functionality.
20
2 Network Element Overview
2.1 Enclosure
The Tellabs 8607 access switch enclosure can be installed into a 19” rack. Installation into a 23”
and ETSI 600 mm rack is supported with additional rack side adapters. The outer dimensions of
the enclosure are 446 x 44.35 (=1U) x 250 mm (w x h x d). The air inlet and outlet holes are on
the left and right hand side of the enclosure. The side adapters are removable. All the connectors
including the one for power are on the front side of the enclosure.
2.1.1 Baseboard
Tellabs 8607 access switch is a stand alone NE and uses a baseboard architecture. This means that
the functionality including NE fixed interfaces have been integrated into a single main baseboard.
All fixed interfaces are accessible from the NE front panel.
21
2 Network Element Overview
Tellabs 8607 access switch provides the following types of fixed interfaces.
• 100/1000BASE-X, or 10/100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T
• Station Clock Input (SCI)
• Station Clock Output (SCO)
• External alarm interface
There are three slots, M0, M1 and M2, for the line modules (LMs). The user can choose the media
type according to needs.
2.1.4 Cooling
Tellabs 8607 access switch is forced convection-cooled equipment. Fresh air is taken from the left
side of the enclosure and blown through the baseboard and the line modules. The outlet air leaves
the enclosure on the right hand side. Forced cooling is needed to dissipate the generated heat load
and to maintain the components within their operating limits. In case of a failure in one fan the
others will maintain adequate cooling for a limited time.
The baseboard is able to monitor the equipment temperature. The temperature warning is raised
when the measured temperature exceeds +81° C. The warning indicates that the operating ambient
temperature is high and about to exceed the allowed operating range. This will occur at ambient
near +65° C. The equipment will go to reset mode after 15 minutes if the measured temperature is
+90° C or higher or immediately if it is +100° C or higher. This is to protect the equipment from
permanent damage caused by high temperature.
The rotation speed control of the fans is based on the temperature values measured from the
baseboard. The fan speed is adjusted smoothly between 0% and 100% of the maximum rotation
speed. The fans will increase the rotation speed to maintain the required operating temperature.
At cold ambient temperatures the fans are shut down. The warning of high temperature will occur
when the equipment is used at high ambient temperature. If the warning occurs and the equipment is
not used at high ambient temperatures, it might be advisable to change the air filter. At start up the
fans are running at maximum speed until the equipment boot up is completed.
The air filter is located in the inlet side of the fan module. It prevents dust from entering the
enclosure and keeps the inside cleaner in order to maintain adequate cooling. An empty line or
power module slot must be shielded with a cover plate.
22
2 Network Element Overview
The fan module and air filter can be replaced or removed on the fly without disturbing the data
traffic through the network element. Please refer to Tellabs ® 8600 Managed Edge System Hardware
Installation Guide for more details.
Fan Module
The fan module is located on the left hand side of the NE and contains four parallel fans. The
baseboard is able to control and monitor the operation of the fans. The rotation speed is adjusted
according to the temperature inside the enclosure, and in case of failure in one fan the other three
will maintain adequate cooling for a limited time.
23
2 Network Element Overview
The operating ambient temperature range for Tellabs 8607 access switch is -40°C — +65°C.
However the start up of the NE is allowed at ambient temperature -20°C or above.
The fan driving circuits are located on the fan backplane module. The baseboard controls the fan
rotating speed via the I2C-bus and monitors the alarms.

2.3 NE Synchronization
Tellabs 8607 access switch has an integrated clock generator that is located on the baseboard and
distributes the clock signal to every interface. The clock level is according to [G.8262], [G.813]
option 1 or [GR-1244-CORE] Stratum-3. An Oven Controlled Oscillator (OCXO) is provided to
meet Telcordia requirements [GR-1244-CORE] for Stratum-3 level clock, holdover frequency
stability at variable temperature.
The NE provides one SCI and one SCO. The SCI is intended to connect an external reference clock
to the NE. Within the external synchronization interface it is possible to configure [G.703] 2048 kHz
synchronization clock mode, 1544 kbps (DS1) or 2048 kbps (E1).
The Node Clock PLL allows synchronization to be derived from any clock source interface or
external synchronization interface that is at least a SEC or Stratum-3 level clock. The clock quality
level requirements for Ethernet Equipment Clock (EEC) synchronization function are specified in
[G.8262].
The NE can be synchronized with a clock derived from any of the following input signals:
• SCI
• Framed E1
• 2048 kHz
• Framed T1
• PDH interfaces
• E1
• T1
• Ethernet interfaces
• 100/1000BASE-X
• 10/100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T

The selected reference signal must fulfil the clock characteristics mentioned in the specifications.
25
2 Network Element Overview
The operational temperature range of the whole network element is determined on the
narrowest operating temperature of the line modules used.
Check that the operational temperature range of the SFP module is suitable for the installation
environment. Note that the temperature of the SFP case can be approximately 15 degrees
higher than the ambient temperature. For more information on the allowed SFP case
temperature range see chapter 3.4.3 SFP Transceivers.

specially trained users (restricted access location as defined in [IEC60950-1]). It must be ensured
that unauthorized persons cannot access the installation.
29
3 Baseboard
3 Baseboard
3.1 Overview
The baseboard is the basic element of Tellabs 8607 access switch. It provides the main NE
functionality with fixed Ethernet interfaces and three slots for pluggable line modules, thus enabling
flexibility to choose different media types of interfaces according to the operator’s needs. A separate
power module is used to feed the NE.
The Tellabs 8607 access switch baseboard mainly comprises of a diverse processor environment,
switch/routing engine and physical interfaces.
3.3 Operation
The function of the baseboard is to concentrate packet based data received from any interface to
NPU and vice versa. The NPU performs layer 2 and layer 3 packet switching, packet forwarding,
packet filtering and traffic management functions. The Power PC based CPU subsystem is used to
control the baseboard functionality.
30
3 Baseboard
The CPU subsystem has an integrated processor from the Power PC family with a 32-bit RISC
processor core with useful internal features, such as independent on-chip cache and memory
management unit. The CPU subsystem is located on a mezzanine module top of the baseboard.
• DDR DRAM
• Boot and application FLASH
The application software is stored in the FLASH memory. Thus, it is possible to update the software
on the field, for example, to have a new feature. Similarly, the card and interface parameters are
stored in FLASH, so those are restored after reset.
RTC
The real time clock has backup for short power breaks. The time is kept for at least 20 hours (at
20º Celsius).
A/D Converter
There is an analog to digital converter on the baseboard. It is used to measure and monitor operating
voltages and temperature.
31
3 Baseboard
The NPU performs layer 2 and layer 3 packet switching, packet forwarding, packet filtering and
traffic management functions. As a buffer the NPU uses DDR type of memory.
Next to the NPU there is FPGA that serves as the LM interface chip which multiplexes and switches
data between the LMs and the NPU.
The IFMUX is a field programmable logic device that serves as a multiplexing block to adapt traffic
between the NPU and the LMs. It provides also a part of the Timing Block functionality.
The timing block consist of Node Clock PLL, OCXO and External Synchronization Interface
(SCI/SCO). The specifications for the EEC synchronization function are specified in [G.8262]. It is
possible to configure External Synchronization Interface to [G.703] 2048/1544 kHz synchronization
clock mode, 1544 kbps (DS1) or 2048 kbps (E1).
Node clock PLL allows synchronization to be derived from any line module interface; fixed Ethernet
interface and External Synchronization Interface that is at least a SEC or Stratum-3 level clock.
The asynchronous serial interface is used for CLI local management connections. The alarm
interface is used for gathering alarm type of information from external devices.
The baseboard has several local, integrated power supplies (DC/DC converter). Those generate
lower voltages which are needed locally within different blocks and are not generated by the main
power module.
During the boot up certain self tests are performed to verify that the basic functionality is OK.
During normal operation CPU monitors (in the background):
• Operating voltages
• Cooling fans and temperature inside the NE
• Memory access (DRAMs, FLASH)
Naturally the NE has a watchdog to reset itself in case of a fatal failure in the CPU subsystem.
32
3 Baseboard
3.4 Interfaces
An interface provides a physical connection to the network. Each interface has its own
media-specific components such as a framer or MAC and physical media interface device or
transceiver. They perform control functions according to the media type.
An interface typically:
A line module installed in any of the three slots M0, M1 and M2 provides a physical connection to
the network. Typically each media type has its own dedicated line module. The supported media
types are:
DSL
• 4xSHDSL LM
• 2xADSL LM
Ethernet
• 8x10/100BASE-TX LM
PDH/multiservice

All line modules are of pluggable type, thus it is possible to install later a new line module to any
empty slot, or replace an existing one. An empty line module slot must be shielded with a cover plate.
The following table shows line module equipping recommendation principles for Tellabs 8607
access switch.
33
3 Baseboard
The following table outlines the legal combination of LM equipping in Tellabs 8607 access switch.
2xADSL LM can be used only in slot M0 of Tellabs 8607 access switch! Other LMs do not
have slot place restrictions. Also when the 8x10/100BASE-TX LM is installed, only one xDSL
LM is allowed.
34
3 Baseboard
The Tellabs 8607 access switch provides several fixed interfaces that are integrated on the baseboard
of the NE.
Ethernet Interfaces
Tellabs 8607 access switch supports two independent fixed Gigabit Ethernet user interfaces. Both
interfaces can operate in either electrical mode at triple speed, e.g. 10/100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T
through an RJ-45 connector (auto-negotiation and automatic MDI/MDIX crossover is supported at
all speeds); or an optical SFP transceiver can be used and set the interface to operate in optical mode
replacing the electrical port (exclusive operation).
The electrical Ethernet ports are designed for intra-building use only. They are not meant
for external connections.
Main Features
35
3 Baseboard
Tellabs 8607 access switch provides station clock input and output ports. The SCI is intended to be
connected to an external reference clock source, the SCO outputs the NE clock to the next device.
The E1 timing is 2048 kHz [G.703] clock or 2048 kbps signal, the T1 timing is 1544 kbps DS1
signal with a clock rate of 1544 kHz. The interface type is unbalanced 75 ohm SMB connector,
however symmetrical 100 or 120 ohm interfaces are possible with an external balun panel.
External Alarms
The external alarm interface is used for user configurable outputs and inputs. It provides an output
with solid state relay contacts and four inputs for external voltage free contacts, for example relays.
Typically an input could be connected to a power off relay in an external local device, enabling the
user to monitor possible remote faults.
An output is similar to a conventional relay. It has three pins; common (COM), normally closed
(NC) and normally open (NO) pins. The configuration is carried through CLI or Tellabs 8000
network manager. If the NE is not powered, there is a connection between the NC and COM pins.
The input consists of a comparator and protecting circuits. When the input is connected below the
threshold voltage, for example, to ground by an external device (relay), the state of the input is
considered to be closed, otherwise open.
CLI
Tellabs 8607 access switch can be locally controlled and managed through the asynchronous serial
interface (RS-232 type).

WARNING: Optic operation should be verified by observing the status LEDs. Do not look into
the laser or fiber to verify operation. See also Safety Notes.
Optical Transceivers
The Tellabs 8600 system uses Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers in the optical
interfaces.
An SFP optical transceiver is a hot-swappable input/output device that links a port on an optical
module with the fiber-optic network. For each application a certain type of SFP is required. You can
install or remove the SFP while the device is operating.
The connector type of the Tellabs 8600 system optical transceiver modules is LC duplex, see Fig. 11.
Fig. 11 LC Connectors
Fig. 12 shows a picture of a SFP optical transceiver, see chapter SFPs Used in Tellabs 8600 System
on models for various distances.
Only Tellabs supplied and approved lasers should be used. If any other lasers or lasers from
any other source than Tellabs are used, the use thereof will be solely at the customer´s risk,
and the laser class, compatibility with the laser safety and EMC standards must be checked.
37
3 Baseboard
When using an SFP with a high launch power in short distances, it may be required to decrease
the launch power by using an online optical attenuator or an attenuating optical cable in order to
meet the input power range.
Check that the operational temperature range of the SFP module is suitable for the installation
environment. Note that the temperature of the SFP case will be approximately 15 degrees
higher than ambient temperature.
Electrical Transceivers
The Tellabs 8600 system uses Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers also in some
electrical interfaces. An SFP transceiver is a hot-swappable input/output device that links a port
on a transceiver module with the network. For each application a certain type of SFP is required.
You can install or remove the SFP while the device is operating.
The connector type of the Tellabs 8600 system electrical transceiver modules is RJ-45 or DIN
1.0/2.3. See chapter SFPs Used in Tellabs 8600 System on models for various distances.

4 Power Modules
4 Power Modules
Tellabs 8607 access switch can be fed by -48 Vdc or +24 Vdc battery voltage. The same DC power
module can be used for both battery voltages.
4.1.1 Overview
Tellabs 8607 access switch provides two DC power modules on the front side of the NE. If
redundant power feeding is required, it is achieved by installing DC power modules to both slots.
An empty power module slot must be shielded with a cover plate. The nominal input voltage is
-48 Vdc or +24 Vdc. The DC power module has a DC/DC converter with 12 Vdc output. The output
is stabilized and galvanically isolated from the input.
The 12 Vdc output of the DC power module is used to supply the cooling fans and it is routed to the
baseboard via the fan backplane module and the actual locally operating voltages are derived on
the baseboard by on board DC/DC converters. Some line modules require operating voltages that
are not present on the baseboard, therefore these voltages are generated locally on the individual
line module.
4.1.2 Interfaces
The input connector is located on the front side of the DC power module. The 12 Vdc output
voltage and I2C-bus are connected from the DC power module to the baseboard through the fan
backplane module.
50
4 Power Modules
4.1.3 Operation
The input voltage is fed through the input filter and fuse to the input capacitors. The DC power
module also includes inrush current limiter for the capacitors and transient overvoltage protection.
Redundancy can be realized by using two DC power modules in the enclosure. There is no active
current sharing between the two DC power modules. However, the current will normally be divided
rather equally between the two DC power modules. One DC power module is able to supply the
whole current required by Tellabs 8607 access switch. The output voltage of the DC power module
has current limit circuit.
On the DC power module there is a voltage monitor for input voltage detection. If the input voltage
after the fuse is missing or too low, an alarm is forwarded to the baseboard, and a LED indicates the
input voltage status.

5.1.1 Overview
The 2-port bondable 4-wire ADSL line module (2xADSL LM) provides one ADSL2/2+ interface
with one ADSL line using two wires or one bonded ADSL2+ interface with two ADSL lines using
four wires.
2xADSL LM provides one logical packet forwarding interface (IP/MPLS interface) and two
physical 2-wire DSL line interfaces. If 2xADSL LM is configured to ATM bonding mode, both the
DSL1 and DSL2 pairs are used. In unbonded mode only the DSL2 pair is used and the DSL1 pair is
unused. Both DSL pairs are connected using a single RJ-14 connector. 2xADSL LM provides a
physical link between the network and the network processor located in the baseboard of Tellabs
8607 access switch.
In 2xADSL LM both the DSL1 and DSL2 lines are available in the same connector.
2xADSL LM interface ports are protected against lightning surge overvoltage of up to 1500 V
longitudinal and metallic (cm and dm) mode (1.2/50 and 10/700 μs) without additional external
primary protection devices. The ports fulfill the isolation requirements of [IEC60950-1]
(1500 Vac rms 50/60 Hz common mode).
For protection against higher voltages (such as lightning surges), coordination between the
secondary protection (within the equipment) and primary protection (external) must be used.
The primary protection devices, such as Gas Discharge Tubes (GDT), must operate before the
voltage exceeds the maximum tolerance of the secondary protection devices within the equipment
(1500 V (1.2/50 and 10/700 μs)).
When using GDTs as primary protection devices, connect a GDT from both the Tip and Ring
lines to ground potential.

5.2.1 Overview
The main function of the 4xSHDSL Line Module (LM) is to provide four symmetrical and
bidirectional 135 Ω SHDSL interfaces. 4xSHDSL LM provides a physical link between the network
and the network processor located in the baseboard of Tellabs 8607 access switch.
4xSHDSL LM interface ports are protected against lightning surge overvoltage of up to 1500 V
longitudinal and metallic (cm and dm) mode (1.2/50 and 10/700 μs) without additional external
primary protection devices. The ports fulfill the isolation requirements of [IEC60950-1]

5.4.1 Overview
The main function of 8xchE1/chT1 Line Module (LM) is to provide eight symmetrical 120 Ω
short or long haul n x 64 kbps channelized E1 interfaces (2,048 Mbps), or alternatively, eight
symmetrical 100 Ω short or long haul n x 64 kbps channelized T1 interfaces (1,544 Mbps). The
operating mode is software-selectable.
8xchE1/chT1 LM provides a physical link between the network and the data plane and forwarding
(NPU) in the Tellabs 8607 access switch.
For protection against higher voltages (such as lightning surges), coordination between the
secondary protection (within the equipment) and primary protection (external) must be used.
The primary protection devices, such as Gas Discharge Tubes (GDT), must operate before the

When using GDTs as primary protection devices, connect a GDT from both the Tip and Ring lines
to ground potential. The Receive as well as the Transmit lines must be protected.
The E1/T1 interfaces are designed and tested to withstand a 1.5 kV longitudinal and metallic
(cm and dm) mode surge pulse (1.2/50 µs and 10/700 μs) without any external protection
devices. If higher surge voltages are expected, external primary protection devices are
required. The firing voltage of the protection devices must be less than 1 kV and the devices
must be selected so that no signal quality degradation occurs.
