Roll No.
General Instructions:
(i) All question are compulsory.
(ii) Question number 1 to 5 are very short answer questions and carry 1 mark each.
(iii) Questions number 6 to 10 are short answer questions and carry 2 marks each.
(iv) Questions number 11 to 22 are also short answer questions and carry 3 marks
each.
(v) Questions number 23 is a value based question and carry 4 marks.
(vi) Questions number 24 to 26 are long answer questions and carry 5 marks each.
(vii) Use log tables, if necessary. Use of calculators is not allowed.
Section A
1. Square planar complexes with co-ordination number four exhibit geometrical isomerism
whereas tetrahedral complexes do not. Why?
5. Glucose or sucrose are soluble in water but cyclohexane or benzene (simple six membered
ring compounds) are insoluble in water. Explain.
Section B
6. Phthalic acid + NH3 D ∆ E ∆ F. Identify D, E and F
8. The osmotic pressure of blood is 7.65 atm. at 310 K. An aqueous solution of glucose
which is isotonic with blood has the percentage (wt./volume)?

(i) Cl2/NaOH/HOH
C − CH3 +
(c) (ii) H
(i) What is the charge on AgI colloidal particles in the two tubes (A) and (B)?
(ii) Give reason for the origin of charge
21. Differentiate:
(a) 1-Hexanol and l-chlorohexane
(b) Diethyl ether and n-butanol
(c) Diethyl ether and n-pentane
2. In a cubic closed packed structure of mixed oxides the lattice is made up of oxide
ions, one eighth of tetrahedral voids are occupied by divalent ions (A2+) while one
half of the octahedral voids occupied trivalent ions (B3+). What is the formula of the
oxide?
Section D
23. Chelating ligands form a cyclic structure on their co-ordination to the metal ion. EDTA
is one such ligand. The use of such reactions involving chelation are being widely used
in chelation therapy.
Section E
24. 1. Metallic gold crystallizes in fcc lattice. The length of the cubic unit cell is a = 4.07Å.
(a) What is the closest distance between gold atoms.
(b) How many “nearest neighbours” does each gold atom have at the distance
calculated in (a).
(c) What is the density of gold?
(d) Prove that the packing fraction of gold is 0.74.

2. (i) An inorganic compound (A) is formed on passing a gas (B) through a conc.
liquor containing Na2S and sodium sulphite.
(ii) On adding (A) into a dilute solution of silver nitrate a white precipitate appears
which quickly changes into a black coloured compound (C).
(iii) On adding two or three drops of FeCl3 into the excess of solution (A) a violet
2. An acidic solution of Cu2+ salt containing 0.4 g of Cu2+ is electrolyzed until all
the copper is deposited. The electrolysis is continued for seven more minutes with
the volume of solution kept at 100 ml and the current at 1.2 amp. Calculate the
volume of gases evolved at NTP during the entire electrolysis.
