Subject: RE: Required Major Bridge GFC by End of July 18
Dear Naik,
As per our telephonic discussion and reference to trailing mail, “SILT factor value” for Minor & Major bridge should
be mention in Factual Geotech report by investigation agency. The same silt factor shall be used for scour depth
calculation and PMC always verifying this silt factor value from Factual GT Report only. Kindly instruct to soil agency
to provide (mention) silt factor value in factual GT report as basis for PMC Cross verify & approval.
TPL Reply: Noted and provided wherever soil is encountered. For rocks weak to Strong ref. below reply.
@Younis
Depth of scour could be possible in soil and highly weathered rock (where Core Recovery < 35%) only.
Recommended Depth of scour shall be restricted up to rock level irrespective of calculation by keeping note that,
rock is encountered at particular depth.
@Eswar Sir,
For optimization of foundation depth where rock strata is encountered at deeper depth (let say more than 3.5m), in
that case silt fator is play important role to fix scour depth and accordingly founding level. If soil/weathered rock
encountered till deeper depth we can’t keep our founding level at rock level in every case. As I understand, at some
bridge location, soil/weathered rock encountered in deeper depth also.
b) Shear strength of soil can be evaluated from IS: 2911 (part 1/ sec2) since it is difficult to collect cores
in weathered/soft rocks, the method suggested by Cole and Stroud using ‘N’ values is more widely
used.
2
c) If sound rock is met with, at the higher levels than the anticipated scour,
scour criteria will not be applicable as per IS: 7784 part.1-1993.
Based on the above we can easily evaluate the scour depth in rocky strata. However, the scour depth can be
restricted in weathered rocks.

Dear Punit,
When rock is available at shallow depth where is the question of silt factor?
66 – Rock depth 1m

Dear Sir,
For major bridge 66 & 68E pls provide silt factors for arriving at scour depths.
Thanks in advance.

Dear Sir,
Following is the status of some of the major bridges for which we required GFC status by end of this month. So
kindly complete all submissions (Hydrology, GAD’s, Structural design’s) by 25th July 2018. Pl confirm.
To expedite the review and approval DFCC/PMC is ready to cooperate. SMEC support is required to complete the
task on time.
With Regards,
