1 hour 45 minutes

Candidates answer on the Question Paper.

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST

Write your Centre number and Index number on all the work you hand in. Write in dark blue or black pen.

You may use a soft pencil for any diagrams, graphs or rough working. Do not use staples, paper clips, highlighters, and glue or correction fluid.

Answer all questions.

Write your answers to Section A, Questions 10 and 11 'in the spaces provided on the Question Paper.

Write your answer to Question 12 on the lined pages provided.

Question 12 comes with an EITHER or OR option; and you need only to answer one of the two choices.

Candidates are reminded that all quantitative answers should include appropriate units. Candidates are advised to show all their working in a clear and orderly manner, as more marks are awarded for sound use of physics than for correct answers.

At the end of the examination, fasten any separate answer paper to the Question Paper. The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.

Whenever necessary, the value of the acceleration due to gravity, g, is taken as 10 m/s2.

deceleration of car

E = x 100

acceleration of free fall

As an example of the use of this chart for a car of mass 900 kg, the figures in the table show a maximum braking force for the foot brake of 6700 N. The point A, corresponding to the mass, and the point B, corresponding to the braking force, are joined to give a straight, sloping line. This line is extended to cut the braking efficiency scale at the point C, and shows that in this particular case, the stopping distance S from an initial speed of 20 m S·1 is about 27 m.

(a) Read from the chart the braking efficiency corresponding to point C.

Braking efficiency = [1]

(b) Using the definition of braking efficiency given above, find the deceleration corresponding to the value of braking efficiency in (a). Give your answer in m S·2.

Deceleration = ... ... ... ... ... [1]

(c) Show, by calculation, that the deceleration you obtained in (b) gives a stopping distance of 27 m, to 2 significant figures, from an initial speed of

20 m S·1. [1]

(d) Draw a line on the chart to represent the results of the hand brake test on the

car of mass 900 kg. [1]

Using the hand brake alone,

(i) find the stopping distance from a speed of 20 m S·1.

Stopping distance = [1]

(ii) find the braking efficiency.

Braking efficiency = [1]

(e) Use the chart to estimate the braking efficiency for a car of mass 1300 kg if

the maximum braking force were 14 000 N. Comment on the answer. [2]

9 A teacher carried out an experiment to investigate the acceleration of free fall of a disc magnet in a hollow pipe made of different materials.

(c) In another experiment, the disc magnet was dropped into another hollow pipe made of aluminium at the same height. The time taken for the disc magnet to reach the bottom is different as compared to the disc magnet falling through the copper pipe.
