The Physics 104 final exam contains 6 multi-part questions covering topics like: 1) Estimating the radius of an Aluminum nucleus and potential energy. 2) Properties of hydrogen atoms in a stellar atmosphere at 79,000 K including excited states and emission wavelengths. 3) Calculating wavelengths for an airplane and electron moving at 300 m/s. 4) Finding the ground state energy and probability of an electron confined in a 30 cm infinite well. 5) Determining the angular momentum given a minimum angle between it and the z-axis. 6) Identifying the inner shell configuration and outer shell box notation for the element Germanium with Z=32.

PHYSICS 104

FINAL EXAM

1. Estimate the radius of the Aluminum nucleus. Assume all the α kinetic energy, Kα, goes
into potential energy at dmin.

2. Suppose that the stellar atmosphere has a temperature of order T= 79,000 K.

a. Is it reasonable to expect that a lot of the Hydrogen atoms will be excited to the first
excited state?
b. What is the wavelength of the light emitted when these excited atoms decay back to
the n=1 ground state level?

3. If moving with 𝑣 = 300 𝑚/𝑠 , what would be the wavelength

a. Of an 18,000 kg airplane
b. Of an electron

4. An electron is confined in an infinite well of 30 cm width.

a. What is the ground-state energy?
b. In this state, what is the probability that the e- would be found within 10 cm of the
left-hand wall?

5. Suppose the minimum angle between |~L| and the z axis is 300. What is|~L|?

6. Consider the element Ge, which has nuclear charge of Z=32. The outer shell
configuration is 3d104s24p2.
a. Give the full configuration for the remaining inner shell electrons.
b. In “box” notation, lay out the outer-shell configuration given for Ge above. (Hint: All
boxes are maximally filled except the 4p boxes. There are 3 such boxes, and the two
electrons go into separate boxes. Remember Hund’s rule)
c. What is the Z value such that the 4d and 5s shells as well as all inner shells are also
filled.
