(Common to Computer Science and Engineering and
Electronics and Communication Engineering)
Time: Two hours Maximum: 50 Marks
Answer all questions
1. (a) Interest centers around the life of an electronic component. Suppose it is known that
the probability that the component fails a particular test is 0.20 and the probability that
the component displays strain but does not actually fail is 0.35.
(i) What is the probability that the component does not fail the test?
(ii) What is the probability that the component works perfectly well?
(iii) What is the probability that the component either fails or shows strain in the test?
(4 Marks)
(b) Suppose that the measurement error X of a certain physical quantity is decided by the
density function Determine k that renders a
valid density function. (3 Marks)
2. (a) A player tosses three fair coins. He wins Rs. 5 if 3 heads appear, Rs. 3 if 2 heads
appear, Re. 1 if 1 head occurs. On the other hand, he loses Rs. 15 if 3 tails occur.
Find (i) the expected gain E (X ) and (ii) V (2 X 3) . (3 Marks)
(b) The continuous random variable X has a probability density function given by
a bx 2 ,0 x 1 3
f ( x) . Find the values of a and b if E ( X ) . (4 Marks)
0, otherwise 5
3. (a) Define moment generating function (MGF). Also find the value of k and then find the
MGF for the distribution whose probability density function is given as

(b) If a random variable has the probability function P( X x ) , x 1,2,
2x
Find MGF, and hence find mean and variance of X . (3 Marks)

(b) There are ten urns and three of them contain one white and nine black balls, another
three contain nine white and one black balls and the remaining four contains five
white and five black balls. One of the urns is selected at random and a ball is taken
from it. If the selected ball turned to be white, find the probability that the urn
containing one white and nine black balls was selected. (4 Marks)
5. Let denote the random variable that is defined as the sum of the values appearing in the
upper face of two fair dice and be the absolute difference of the values appearing in the
upper face of two fair dice.
(i) Determine the probability mass function for the random variable
(ii) Determine the cumulative distribution function for the random variable
(iii)Determine (7 Marks)
7. Define geometric distribution for the number of trials for first success. Obtain moment
generating function of that distribution and find its mean and variance. (7 Marks)
