New SHDSL termination unit ‘QSTU’

(Quad SHDSL Termination Unit)

For its access product family ‘ULAF+’ Siemens Switzerland Ltd. announces a new SHDSL termination
unit featuring four 2Mbps interfaces. QSTU plug-ins and desktops significantly increase link density
in central offices and customer premises (each subrack now provides up to 64 links), resulting in a
decrease of overall system costs. The QSTU supports ETSI/ITU 2-wire and 4-wire modes, as well as
the upcoming ITU-T 8-wire mode.

HIGHLIGHTS
Four 2Mbps interfaces (G.703 ports with RJ-45 connectors), each providing either 2Mbps
transparent E1, G.704 frame structured E1 or ISDN PRA

The following operating modes can be configured:

- 4× 2-wire resulting in higher 2Mbps port density

- 2× 4-wire resulting in higher port density and up to 40% higher loop reach

- 1× 8-wire allowing for up to 100% higher loop reach

Adjustable data rates (192 kbps … 2’048 kbps), e.g. for increased reach

Remote Power Supply

Compatible with all previous ULAF+ SHDSL equipment (STU, STU2, SRU), controller units (OMI
and OMI SNMP ), infrastructure (subracks and accessories) and the Local Craft Terminal soft-
ware LCT

Supported by ULAF+’s remote management systems ‘AccessIntegrator’ and ‘LineIntegrator’

Available as desktops and plug-ins for ULAF+ 19” subracks

Compliant with the relevant ITU, ETSI and EN standards

1 The ‘Quad SHDSL termination unit’ (QSTU)
1.1 Product description
Higher product integration
The QSTU is the most recent addition to the ULAF+ access product portfolio and follows the trend
towards higher product integration. Up to four independent 2Mbps ports in a single device signifi-
cantly reduce space requirements in central offices and customer premises, thus reducing overall
system costs. For cost-sensitive Telecom companies, the QSTU is the ideal platform to deploy their
2Mbps services.

Higher loop reaches

Using SHDSL multi-wire technologies, QSTU loop reaches increase by 40% to 100%, resulting in
larger service coverages. Distances can be extended with locally or remotely fed regenerator units
(see ULAF+’s SHDSL regenerator unit ‘SRU’). On top of that, data rates can be adjusted, increasing
loop reaches even further.

Management systems
QSTU’s are configured locally with the Local Craft Terminal (LCT) software, but the QSTU also blends
perfectly into ULAF+’s remote management system environment (see management software
‘LineIntegrator’ and ‘AccessIntegrator’).

1.2 Typical QSTU applications

Important note: In the figures below subracks are equipped with QSTU’s only. Yet, subracks can
be equipped with different ULAF+ termination units (QSTU, STU, STU2, GTU, OTU)
in the same subrack.

Figure 1-2 : Four STU desktops connected per QSTU plug-in

In Figure 1-2 sixty-four 2Mbps lines are deployed to customer premises from a single 19” subrack
e.g. located in a central office. The already introduced SHDSL termination units ‘STU’ feature G.703
interfaces and data interfaces such as 10/100BaseT, X.21, V.35 and V.36 for n x 64 kbps applica-
tions.

Figure 1-3 : Two STU2 desktops connected per QSTU plug-in

In Figure 1-3 thirty-two 2Mbps lines are deployed from a single 19” subrack. Yet, compared to the
application outlined in Figure 1-2, loop reaches from the QSTU plug-ins to the recently introduced
SHDSL termination units ‘STU2’ are approx. 40% higher due to the four wire transmission mode.
STU2 units feature the same G.703 and data interfaces for n x 64 kpbs applications as the STU does.

Figure 1-4 shows QSTU plug-ins and desktops connected to each other by two, four or eight wires.
Hence, between sixteen and sixty-four 2Mbps lines can be deployed from a single 19” subrack. Loop
reaches vary according to the transmission mode used.

Figure 1-5 : One QSTU desktop connected per QSTU plug-in

Where system integration is important, QSTU plug-ins can be connected to QSTU plug-ins at the far
end. As shown in Figure 1-5, this system configuration makes a high E1 density possible, thus less-
ens space requirements.
Figure 1-6 shows the QSTU supplying regenerators and desktops. The QSTU offers four independ-
ent onboard ‘Remote Power Supplies’ (RPS), each capable of powering remote units, either a SHDSL
desktop or up to two regenerators.
