Music Instrument
There are three types of instruments, namely the:
Aerophone (wind instruments), such as the serunai, pinai, seruling and selumprit flutes.
Membranophone (drum-sounds produced by membrane-covered musical instruments) such as
the gendang, geduk, gedombak, rebana, kompang, tar and jidor drums.
Idiophone (percussion instruments of fixed immovable surface), such as gong, kesi, canag, saron,
kenong, gambang kayu, bonang, etc; and
o Chordophone (string instruments), such as the rebab
Music Ensemble
1. KERTOK Ensemble:
• a type of musical ensemble consists of xylophones
• Single slabs of wood are placed over coconut shell resonators and struck by wood mallets.
2. Dikir Barat

• It was known to have developed from a sort of Indian theatre performance during the 9th
century by visiting Indian travelers.

a type of Javanese dance in which couples exchange poetic verses as they dance to the music of a rebab or
violin and a gong.
6. Sila't Milayu
• form of martial arts similar to Ta'i Chi.
• It originates from Malay Peninsula since the Christian Era.
• Sila't Milayu is a mixture of martial arts, dance and music usually accompanied by Gongs, rums and
Indian Oboes.

Dan Nhi is popular among several ethnic groups in Vietnam. It is also referred to as Dan Co in
southern provinces of Viet Nam.
Dan Nguyet has two strings and the resonator resembles the moon, that is probably why it is named
Dan Nguyet, which means moon lute.
Dan Ty Ba is a four-string instrument which is frequently present in a traditional orchestra.
Dan Tranh is also known as Dan Thap Luc or sixteen-stringed zither. Its shape resembles a bamboo
tube that has been sliced vertically in half.
Dan Tam, This three-stringed lute is used by several ethnic groups in Vietnam. whereas the Ha Nhi
call it Ta in. This instrument exists in three sizes: large, medium, and small. The small is the most
popular.
T'rung is one of the popular musical instruments closely associated with the spiritual life of the
Bahnar, TSedan, Giarai, Ede and other ethnic minority groups in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
Dam Thap Luc is a sort of zither with thirty-six brass strings as it is called. It has the shape of an
isosceles trapezoid, with a slightly convex sound board made of light, porous, unvarnished wood.
Trong Com (rice drum) gets its name from the practice of placing a pinch of hot steamed rice in the
middle of the drum skin to "tune" the instrument.

Ching are small bowl-shaped finger cymbals of thick and heavy bronze, with a broad rim commonly used
in Cambodia and Thailand.

SKORTHOM - two big drums similar to Japanese (membranophone)
ONEAT – xylophones (idiophone)
KONGVONG - gong circles (idiophone)
Music Ensemble
Pinpeat is a Cambodian musical ensemble or an orchestra that usually accompanies ceremonial music of
the royal courts and temples. Music is always part of their court dances, masked plays, shadow plays, and
religious ceremonies. This group is similar to the Piphat ensemble of Thailand and usually consists of
nine or ten instruments.

Ranat is Thai xylophone. It has 21 or 22 wooden bars suspended by cords over a boat-shaped trough
resonator, and is played with two mallets. It is used as a leading instrument in the piphat ensemble.
Khong Wong Lek is a gong circled used in Thai classical music. It has 18 tuned bossed gongs.
Taphon is a traditional drum of Thailand. It is barrel-shaped, with two heads, and is played by the hands
and fingers of both hands.
Klong That is a drum that provides rhythm in Piphat Ensemble.
Ching are small bowl-shaped finger cymbals of thick and heavy bronze, with a broad rim commonly used
in Cambodia and Thailand.
Thon, a small goblet drum is also used in Thai traditional music. The drum is made of lathe-spun wood
which is covered with goat skin.

Piphat – a mid-sized orchestra that is performed in either outdoor style with hard mallets or indoor

Khrueang sai – an orchestra that combines some of the percussion and wind instruments of the piphat
with an expanded string section
Mahori – this ensemble is traditionally played by women in the courts of central Thailand and
Cambodia
