Use of Geosynthetics in Highway Embankments

Geosynthetics can be used to reinforce highway embankments, allowing the base width B2 of reinforced embankments to be narrower than the conventional width B1. Reinforced embankments are constructed by placing a geotextile and gravel layer, then backfilling and compacting soil in layers. A wrapped-around retaining wall provides external stability, while the geotextile prevents pull-out failures and resists rupture to ensure internal stability.
