ASSIGNMENT #2
Due Date: 30th September, 2009

1. What is the difference between a generator and a motor?


2. Explain the working principle of a DC motor.
3. What is back e.m.f? Explain the significant of back e.m.f.
4. Derive the expression for the electromagnetic torque developed in a DC motor.
5. Sketch and explain the speed-current, speed-torque and torque-current characteristics of a
shunt motor, series motor and compound motor.
6. What are the applications of DC shunt and the series motors?
7. A 440V DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5ohm and field resistance of 180ohm.
Determine the back e.m.f when giving a power output of 7.46kW at 85% efficiency.
8. A 4-pole, 250V, series motor has a wave connected armature with 1254 conductors. The flux per
pole is 22mWb when motor is taking 50A. Armature and field resistance are 0.2ohm and
0.25ohm respectively. Calculate i) back e.m.f, ii) speed of the motor, iii) torque developed.
9. A 250Vdc shunt motor has a no load speed 1200rpm. The line current being 5A. When fully
loaded, line current is 30A. A shunt field resistence is 250ohm and the armature resistance is
0.5ohm. Find the speed of the motor on full load and its speed regulation.
10. A 4-pole, 250V DC, series motor has a wave connected armature with 496 conductors. Calculate,
i) gross torque, ii)shaft torque, iii)efficiency, iv) armature resistance.
Assume flux per pole is 22mWb, the armature current is 50A, the speed is 462rpm, R se=0.14ohm
and the mechanical losses are 810W.
