1) A software project has been estimated to cost $850,000 and take

10 months. Given the project outcomes from the Standish Group
report mentioned at the beginning of the chapter, if the project
completes at all what will its cost and schedule more likely turn out
to be?

According to Standish Group for deliverable software projects.

45 % projects are over budget and 63 % projects are over schedule.
Then in this context for given scenario
The project will cost $12,32,500 and time about 17 months.

2) Name at least one software-intensive company that was in business in the

year 2000 that isn’t in business today. When did they go out of business?
Why did they go out of business?

FOX Software Company who created FoxPro, a text based procedural

Programming language and DBMS.
FoxPro was installed on almost every computer as it was the first DBMS.
They go out of business due to several reasons :

a) Fox Software did not have the resources to survive.

b) They can’t fulfill the changing requirements.
c) Its product was not cross platform.
d) They lack marketing resources and can’t compete against Microsoft
money.

3) Name at least one software-intensive company that was in business in the

year 2000 that is much smaller today (fewer employees, smaller market
share, etc.) than they were then. What happened to the company between
then and now? Why are they so much smaller now than before?

INTUIT the creator of outstanding software Quicken, a personal finance

software was at their climax once but now a day they are working on
small projects like Home tax preparation software (Turbo Tax), Quick
Books

They shrinked due to following reasons :

a) Intuit was unable to dealt with bugs. It cost $1 million for removing the
bug from Quicken 2.0 that was released.
b) Lack of management and resources. In 2005 Intuit was working only
with three programmers due to payroll problem.
c) Unable to meet the changing user requirement and lack of market grip.
d) Due to lack of resources, can’t compete in software industry.

Enabling Technologiz Company who was working on big projects like

VOIP but today they do network installation and network related software
projects

a) Lack of management
b) Lack of marketing
c) A VOIP project (first project in the market) loss which cost $1 million,
was the the big reason of collapse.

4) Can you describe a software project that was a net money loser for an
organization? Who was that organization? What was the project? When
did it happen? How much money do you think was spent on the project?
How much, if any, do you think the software project recovered?

The C-17 cargo plane project was the money loser project for McDonnell
Douglas. It happens in 1987 when the project ran $500 million over budget,
because of the complexity of its avionics software.
The C-17 included 19 onboard computers, 80 microprocessors, and 6
different programming languages. Unnecessary complexity was the reason
for over budget and over schedule.
