Homework M1: Bring Paper Copy of You Results To Class

This document provides homework instructions for an engineering course. Students are asked to: 1) Join an online group for communication about the course; 2) Get access to Matlab software; and 3) Create a mathematical model based on an experiment measuring the heel angle of a milk carton with coins inside at increasing numbers of coins. Students must perform the experiment, make a plot, do a curve fit, and write a one page report to bring to class. The work is individual and students will present and discuss their results.

Homework M1

Bring paper copy of you results to class

‣ A) Subscribe to the group “marine innovation (SD2707)” on www.kth.se/social (I will use it for communication)

‣ B) Make sure to have access to Matlab asap!

‣ If you need to you can download & install Matlab from http://progdist.ug.kth.se/
If you are unfamiliar with Matlab you find an introduction on course web page.

‣ C) Create a mathematical model based on empirical experiments that predicts the heel angle of a standard 1 liter Arla milk
box (cut open as illustrated) laying flat in water as function of number of Swedish 1kr coins on top of each other inside the
box as the pictures show. Try to keep the experiment as “2D” as possible :-)
- Perform the experiment starting with no coin increasing the number of coins up to at least 25 and plot the heel angle as
function of number of coins.
- Perform a suitable curve fit to your experimental data
- Write and bring one A4 paper describing your work and results to class.
- Non-mandatory extra task: Try to derive an analytical model to the problem :-)

‣ This homework is to be done individually - no collaboration is allowed.

‣ Be prepared to describe and discuss your work orally in class.
‣ Your work is to be presented to your peers - i.e to engineers with similar technical background as you.
‣ Note that even if you fail the assignment technically you can both write a report on your work and prepare a discussion on
your work/problems.
‣ Questions shall be asked through www.kth.se/social in the group “Marine innovation (SD2707)”
