Zener Diodes

The Zener is a diode operated

in reverse bias at the Zener
Voltage (Vz).

• 1. Determine the state of the Zener

diode by removing it from the
network and calculating the voltage
across the resulting open circuit.

• 2. Substitute the appropriate circuit

and solve for the desired unknowns.

Zener Diodes

• When V L  VZ
– The Zener is on
– Voltage across the Zener is VZ
– Zener current: IZ = IR – IL
– The Zener Power: PZ = VZIZ

• When V L < VZ
– The Zener is off
– The Zener acts as an open circuit

Zener Resistor Values
If R is too large, the Zener diode cannot conduct because the available amount of
current is less than the minimum current rating, IZK. The minimum current is
given by:
I Lmin  I R  I ZM

The maximum value of resistance is:

VZ
RLmax 
I Lmin

If R is too small, the Zener current exceeds the maximum current

rating, IZM . The maximum current for the circuit is given by:
VL V
I L max 
 Z
RL RL min
The minimum value of resistance is:
RV Z
RL min 
Vi  V Z

Zener Resistor Values
1.Find the range of RL that will result in VL being maintained at 10 V.
2. Determine the maximum wattage rating of the diode.

Zener Input Voltage Values
For fixed values of RL, the voltage Vi must be sufficiently large to turn the Zener
diode on. The minimum turn-on voltage Vi min is determined by:

( RL  R )VZ
Vimin 
RL
Vi max is determined by:

Vimax  I R max R  VZ
